Hi all,

Wondering what the best fibre (et al) ISP is (I'm in Wellington, if that matters). I've been with NOW NZ and bigpipe who I would happily go back to. I've got a router. Here's what I'm thinking:

  • NowNZ: $75 per month, 125GB/month plus a contract (12 month) and think they have some kind of $200 join deal
  • Bigpipe: $79 per month, unlimitedGB/month, $20 bonus with code, and no throttling of speeds on unlimited I believe?
  • 2degrees: $75 per month, unlimited plus a contract (12 month)

There's inspire, slingshot, etc too. I haven't liked Vodafone or Spark in the past, but I'm willing to give it another go if there's a compelling case ;)

Cheers,

Ryan

Bigpipe has been integrated into the rest of Spark. So effectively Bigpipe is just a brand now.

If you have an on account cellphone, the best company will probably be the same one that you use for mobile.

Otherwise it is things like VLAN tagging or not, PPPOE vs DHCP etc. If you need voice - ONT or router.

I was with 2 degrees when I was using fibre in Lower Hutt and then Wellington CBD. They pair at WIX, so local traffic stays local (as long as the other network also pairs at WIX too). IPv6 and great customer support is an added bonus.

Does 2degrees throttle unlimited plans?

Nope (well at least none that I am aware of, or noticed). The gig pipes were free flowing whenever I used it, and they had really good international bandwidth too.

I'd be really surprised if any ISP still throttle their unlimited plans.

Skinny has a really great name if you will accept unlimited 100/20

Spark (and therefore Skinny / Bigpipe) don't openly peer at Internet Exchanges. You'll find more of your traffic heading overseas than you would with other ISPs (e.g. https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=158&topicid=195194&page_no=1#1529441 )

Depends on how much local content ones consumes - in the case of me 99% of my stuff comes from overseas and I think for a lot of people that would be the case.

Regarding Skinny Fibre - I'm a happy chap so far; all the thrills of Spark without the unneeded frills with the added bonus of not having to deal with the vlan tagging setting that other ISPs insist on using.
