Hey all. After 14 years with slingshot i'm considering moving. The downtime recently has been appalling. Even if it means losing my gigabit plan which I believe slingshot is the cheapest option or at the moment.(I pay $107 for gigabit and phone) However at this point id rather have more constant stable up time than what slingshot has been able to provide. I don't know why they've gotten so bad recently maybe they're reaching peak capacity or something. Any suggestions for an ISP with the least amount of down time for a residential connection? I've heard good things about Bigpipe.

Simon mentioned the cause of the issues in this post and the steps they've taken to reduce the chance of it happening again. Generally all fibre ISPs have pretty good up-time. No fibre company is going to guarantee 100% uptime on a residential connection.

off the top of my head it's skinny who is cheapest for gbit right now.

I feel for the likes of @sounddude, poor guys have had a rough time with these issues.

All providers have occasional rocky times, from my view (taking my RSP hat off) slingshot, orcon etc have come a long way compared to their old state of network.

if you require maximum uptime, I'd recommend purchasing a higher SLA service or better yet, a backup service over another medium (say wireless).

you could try Stuff fibre , the first 3 months are $69 for the Gigabit plan, no contract. I switched to them from 2D and in 3 months i have had constant speed with only one nationwide outage of 30 minutes being the only down time i have had.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Just had a look at their website. it reckons I cant get fibre yet even though I already have it. weird.

Rotorua, which has full fibre coverage.

You're not really going to find what you're looking for as all ISP's have outages however if this helps the 2 ISP's I consistently recommend around here is both 2degrees and Voyager. I have both (at different addresses) and keep track of them. The Voyager connection is on VDSL. I can't account for a single time on both ISP's where I've had an outage at the ISP's fault - with the VDSL connection I had an outage when Chorus was upgrading the cabinet but with my UFB connection I can safely say I've had 100% uptime.

I'm not counting router firmware upgrades, VDSL loss of sync (which hardly ever happens), power outages or other local issues.

Most ISP's are very good but every ISP has had past outages. You could join an ISP and have an outage the very next day for example. Really, the only way to help mitigate this is to have 2x connections with 2x different providers on 2x different connection types but while small, there is still a chance you may have an outage on both providers if there is a fibre cut or a meteor hits the exchange. You can't win.

Also, BigPipe used to be good but their support has turned to crap as of late - it seems like they're getting in a way abandoned as Spark appear to want to integrate them with Skinny. Spark are alright, but are behind the times. They don't peer, they don't have technologies that most other providers have such as IPv6 and their network, while it used to be good, is now quite behind the times because of these factors. Also not to mention, expensive if you're with them directly.
