Hey all,

Just have a quick query about Chorus and how they have their residential network setup.

I am currently in the process of moving house and I have my eye on a section that's about 5 houses down the street from the local Chorus exchange building. I have looked online on CIS.geek.nz and can see the nearest Cabinet away from me is at least a few blocks.

If I get a VDSL connection am I going to be connected to the cabinet that is further away or the exchange that is just down the road.

I am also interested in the possibility of getting Fibre installed, it is not "available" but a handful of businesses (including the exchange building) appear to have it so it must be possible. Is this something I go to Chorus about and how much am I looking at roughly. Is it thousands, tens of thousands etc...

You could be connected to either. It depends entirely how the MPF (copper) is run but your RSP would be able to tell you if it's the cabinet or exchange.

Are you in an area that's getting UFB or outside the UFB coverage area? If you are outside the area you can in quire through your RSP about connectivity - but don't necessarily expect something under a 5 figures.

My area is planned to have UFB by 2020, considering I'm more central and live close to businesses, I expect it sooner than that. Here is the Exchange that's close to me.

If you get a prequal done it will say what gear will feed your address. For an example takapuna i think is TNA for the exchange fed properties and TNA/XX meaning thats a cabinet fed property, meaning TNA being the exchange and / XX being the cabinets designation.

Here's to confirm you'll be connected to the exchange. Everything inside the blue border is connected to the exchange.

I've checked the speeds of the house on the same street as the exchange and many of them are getting 70Mbps on VDSL.

As for fibre, there is currently a fibre already running down the street. Ask your ISP if you're interested in paying for it to be connected before the government-funded rollout, but again, don't expect it to come cheap.

Green line is Rural Fibre.

If that runs past your place, you could have a discussion an rsp that does rural fibre to see what it will cost for a tail.

generally is 5 digits, but you will likely be in 4 to get a copper leadin installed anyway...

Both green and blue are fibre but they're different types. Be sure to follow lead in standards when you're installing it, this way it'll make things easier when you come to install fibre.

Thanks for the advice, I can't see the depth requirement anywhere there, but I presume it has to be buried? Right now there's just a bunch of gravel there so digging that up would be a massive pain, but can be done.

The last quote I got was for 8 metres from the cabinet along a green fiber route.

$12k

And green is much cheaper than breaking into purple routes.

The prices can vary hugely due to many factors. I am aware of one recent case where the estimate was 500k as all the existing fibres were used and the existing fibre was direct buried. So they had to run new fibre for 15-20km

I have had other installs as cheap as 3k.

While the map is a good starting point to get an idea of options.

The only way to understand all the costs is to get an ISP to submit a request to Chorus.

As you said Whitianga is getting fibre by Aug 2020, given the scope / quote and install will take about 6 months. That leaves you with maybe 14 months until you get fibre. Is it worth spending all the money. For most of our business customers the answer is no, they decide just to hold out and live with the slow connection. However some decide they can't wait and stump up with the cash.

Based on the fact that then location is very very likely to achieve 70% or more of vdsl performance surely just wait, and in the meantime the copper will be still better than 90% of urban Au.
