We are looking at a potential investment for shared accommodation (effectively a boarding house).

There are 40 rooms, divided among 10 units. The 10 units are part of two dwellings, so two sets of rates, insurance, etc..

No cross lease/unit titles.

What are the options from an ISP point of view, for providing internet in shared accommodation?

Currently the owner is paying for a fibre connection into each individual unit. We are looking at ways to cut costs without affecting the service.

Would the ISP's be happy providing a fibre into each building, instead of each unit?

Likely need to move to a MDU? install. Multi dwelling unit.

Multi pair fibre to a central distribution point. And either provide ethernet from there (with usage/firewall control PC between) or internal fibre to each unit

I'm not actually sure how the fibre is getting into the building

I was more interested in reducing account costs, One or two accounts/plans for each building instead of 5?

One downside of a shared service is that you run the risk of the service to multiple tenants being impacted by actions of individuals, or you being liable for those actions....

You could look at going the other way and making provision for a fibre to each of the 10 units and leave it up to the tenants to pay for the connection...

Do tenants pay for their own power/ hotwater or is it common?

Currently internet and sky is provided to each unit (4 bedrooms) as part of the weekly cost, and they get a power allowance per week.

Good point. If one user gets pinged for dubious use/abuse of service it may impact all users or more likely you as the named account holder I would have thought. If your car is stolen unbeknown to you then used in a robbery it's up to you to prove it wasn't you. It's much easier to make sure your car isn't stolen by giving a number of people access to it.

You might also land yourself in hot water by voiding your ISP's terms and conditions spreading one domestic (?) connection across multiple residences.

Essentially you're suggesting providing wifi in the same way a hotel or motel would. Using a business UFB plan I can't see any issues, I guess speak to the business team at Spark/DTS/Voyager/2degrees to confirm.
