Hi,

I have a pretty poor broadband experience. Currently I am on ADSL at about 7Meg (on a good day). VDSL isnt an option currently due to the distance from the cabinet. I am rural so Fibre isnt likely to ever be an otion (which is annoying as a fibre runs past my front door to my kids school). I could go to a 4G RBI but the cost at my usage is prohibitive.

I have used Chrouses own checker and found that the neihbour on one side has VDSL at 109Meg ! and on my otherside has ADSL at 12Meg. I have checked various broadband maps and cabinet location maps to deduce that I am at the very end of the copper line coming in one direction. and my 'fast' neighbour is on a different copper line to a much closer cabinet. hence his much better experience. His house is probably around 70 metres away. And i even believe the line actually reaches the edge of my property.

Is there anyway to get attached to that line instead of the crappy line i am on now ? I realise that Chorus dont seem to care about anyone on a copper line these days, but can it be done ? It is extremley frustrating, and it doesnt seem that anything will be done to help rural broadband users unless they are willing to pay through the nose.

 Thanks in advance.

The answer to this (and it has popped up many times on Geekzone) is a big no.

If your neighbor is close enough you could set up a wireless link from their place to yours and have a VDSL connection there but there is no chance of Chorus changing your line.

As above, or alternatively get a second line setup to your neighbours house, then run a copper pair from their ETP to your house. Either way, your only hope is a cooperative neighbour.

this is probably a stupid q, but it can't be changed because that's a physical cabling run, not some virtual knobs to tweak right?

Correct - it is a huge task.

Hows the broadband for the neighbor on the other side of you?

Have you asked for a NGA on application quote to see how much it'll cost you to connect to that fibre?

Also just remember just because fibre's running past doesn't mean it isn't backhaul. As above, ask your provider for a price, but don't expect it to be cheap.

Quite often it's not such a big deal in rural situations. Because sections span such large lengths of the roadside a property can overlap RLG's. So it could just mean trenching from your house to another "corner" of your property.

In saying that, OP, don't even try and and get this to happen. Chorus will not be interested.

A wireless bridge to your neighbour will be the best option.
