Hi, just trying to prepare before Chorus turn up, have read a few threads on this forum, thanks for the body of knowledge!
We have copper coming overhead from the street, terminating on the side of our house upstairs near lounge.
From there it connects (via the roofspace) to a bewildering loop of phone jacks which are pretty much unused, apart from one (quite a long length of cable away and downstairs in the study) which is delivering vdsl (there is a landline connected to that jack also, but barely used)
With fibre, my guess is:
-Probably OK to terminate on the side of house (as the copper does now). The copper cable flexes a bit sometimes as a nearby tree blows around - will this be a problem for fibre?
-Better to put the modem/router nearer there, which make the wifi more central and avoid long cable runs from the termination point. This is fairly central and near TV.
Main question if anyone has time:
-For my desktop pc downstairs, I'd need a way to connect it. I could install wifi in it, but would prefer avoiding that. I have at least one Huawei 630 (currently acting as vdsl modem) and a new Huawei 659 (Spark just sent). If I use bridge mode (link below), will the Huawei 630 extend the wifi downstairs? Will ethernet connections to it end up connected to the internet over the 'bridge'? Or would it be a much better 'bridge' if I got cat 6 from the upstairs modem to the study and connected them over that?
-Also, as I understand it Chorus should be able to keep the old phone jacks working, voice only, as a separate system. But will this get complicated (or lead to ugly wiring) given the current phone system heads straight up into roofspace from external connection point?
