i'm still with xtra (10G for $60) after all these years ... maybe it's time to get more for my money question is are vf and ss reliable like xtra?

VF
1) i don't live in the RED ZONE - what does that mean?
2) 20G FS/FS + phone line for $90/mth seems too good to be true - any downsides?
3) any issues w VF bb so far (i remember woosh, orcon, SS had speed issues not too long ago)

SS
1) 15G FS/FS peak + unlimited off peak $60/mth w/o phone sounds even more too good to be true - has SS resolved their speed issues?

VF:
  1. It means you won't be within Vodafone's Red network. It usually doesn't matter, but if your exchange isn't ADSL2+ upgraded, then unbundling will help as Vodafone installs new Huawei equipment, but otherwise, there isn't too much of a difference.
  2. Not really. I'm on Ultimate pack (not Red yet) and it's good. $90 for home phone and broadband too, so the broadband component is $50, so it's good value. I haven't noticed too many issues, other than the bandwidth meter problems, which were resolved by zeroing the usage on the affected days.
  3. Speed issues are not that apparent, I can get upto 6.4mbps. I'm about 2km from the exchange, on ADSL. (your mileage may vary)
SS:
  1. You may want to look around on the Slingshot forums.

hmm ... slingshot forums suggest connection speeds can be unpredictable, luck of draw type scenario.

and VF forums sow doubt about its reliability ... guess stick w telecom for now! (unless i can get BB for no terms, then can quit if not happy) telecom's speeds have never failed me (guess most customers subscribe to check email, and downloaders go to VF/Slingshot!) and i can get their call centre within 2 seconds, not 40 mins!

What do you mean by speed issues?  Slingshot has been getting better and the speed issues of 10 months ago are gone,  SS does 'shape torrents but it doesn't block them and the free data times they work well.  The data banking on the datablocks you buy with Slingshot is also great and makes data $1 a gig  (or less if you upgraded your old plan to add data banking and free off peak data for just adding on 12 months to your contracted period with Slingshot.)

As for the peeks, there was a report to comcom that highlighted that NZ was the winner with it's peaks and lows in with BB connections and the number of peaks and lows happening.   This is been addressed by Slingshot and it's supplier and is getting better slowly.

i got the feeling (may or may not be misled) from this forum

http://forum.slingshot.co.nz/viewforum.php?f=15
http://forum.slingshot.co.nz/viewtopic.php?t=1660

if anyone's going to be unlucky and get crap speeds it just might be me so i dare not sign up for 12 mths of dissatisfaction and unable to get csr (the last time i rang slingshot to find out about their BB was on the line for 40mins and then was asked to provide a landline so they can call me back in a few days and when i said i have no landline only mobile they said "sorry, bye" - not putting up with this crap again.

well i did a change of heart and decided to try slingshot. too tempting.

got connected in just under 10 hours. speeds are quite amazing. took 10s to reach call centre too - that's wonderful.

highly recommend it to everyone! (you can see i'm probably the biggest skeptic about cheap broadband)

ok so now when you read this and decide to join slingshot - please ask for my account number so i can get 1 terrabyte! Wink
