A friend of mine (on Gig fibre) is changing from Vodafone to 2Degrees, and currently uses an Edgerouter Lite.

As Vodafone use IPoE and 2D use PPPoE, we'll need to reconfigure the router, that in itself is no issue, but I'm not sure around the firewall rules etc as this will all currently be setup to use eth0.10, I supposed this can just be changed to use pppoe0?

Is there anything else to watch for when doing this, or should it be pretty straightforward? Thanks.

Just check the MTU settings. Use 1500 MTU on the Pppoe, and 1508 on all other interfaces.

Setup Ipv6 if you haven't already done so.

You will also need to re point your NAT masquerade rule at the PPPOE

Have re-configured the Edgerouter now - ended up factory resetting it as there wasn't much setup on it. Haven't setup IPv6 yet.

Went smooth as, have enabled hardware offloading, but there seems to be an issue with download speed. upload is fine - see attached.

Anything on the edgerouter that could be causing this, or should the customer get in touch with 2D? I don't have another router handy to test with sorry.

Check with 2degrees, as it may be a provisioning error. Same thing has previously happened to me.

Also check that the PPPOE username is in the format of user@snap.net.nz if it is entered as user, then it will still connect. But the provisioning system doesn't work properly.

replace user with your actual 2degrees username.

Also test that your firewall is working properly. Go to grc.com then click on the link to Shields Up, for a firewall tester.

Thank you - possibly was a provisioning error by the look of things - friend rang them and they sorted it then and there. We did have the username correct - couldn't auth at all with it incorrect.

You mentioned the MTU - I assume this would be on the VLAN interface, not the PPPoE interface? Edgerouter doesn't let me change the MTU on the PPPoE interface above 1492, the MTU on the VLAN interface is 1500 by default.

Firewall is definitely working normally.

RE the IPv6 - never set it up myself at all before. What's the benefit of it for the average user who just does 'normal' stuff, and maybe hosts a few games?

I do my Edgerouter config using the CLI, but I think in the GUI it does validity checking on the numbers, so you probably have to change the MTU on the Ethernet port being used as the WAN port first, to 1508, then change the MTU on VLAN 10 on that Ethernet port to 1508, then change the PPPoE MTU to 1500.  It is possible that you may need to commit the 1508 on the Ethernet port before you can then change the others.

Just wanted to note that I had the exact same problem.  Migrated from VF HFC to 2Degrees fibre, with a Edgerouter 4.  Easy setup (other that IPV6, but that's another story), however was only getting 90 down but 400 up.

Found this thread, rang 2Degrees and within 5 minutes, all fixed.  Awesome service from a support desk that knew what it was doing.  Well done 2Degrees
