Hi Folks, *Title Change as I was being unfair* :D

Have been a Trustpower VDSL customer for 3+ years, always happy. Service was stable and good reliable bandwidth.

Took them up on their UFB offer about a week ago and it has been absolute dogs balls.

Having to reset router at least once a day, sometime 3 times.

Xbox is throwing up the 'Double NAT' warning for online gaming which has become basically impossible.

Made a call through to the helpdesk on Saturday and they did all the tests, said nothing was wrong.

This Saturday i will call when it's not working and have time to go through their checks again.

Do you guys have any tips on getting it stable?

Any one here configured the Netcom NF18ACV router for xbox ? (Tried doing the DMZ and port forwarding but the damn thing wouldn't recognise the Xbox MAc address)

Appreciate the help!

That is because they operate CG-NAT - give it a google.

So the service doesn't suck, you are just getting what you pay for from a company that doesn't really care about their broadband, uses it as a loss leader, and just wants you to buy power from them.

You'll need a static IP (do they even offer them ?) or look elsewhere for an ISP that don't do CGNAT....  not sure which don't myself as I'm on static.

Worth mentioning trustpower do offer public ip's on some of their plans by default. 1000/500 for example is one of these.

@Chrisfair Let me guess you took up the free Samsung offer and now you are complaining?

That's harsh. OP states he has been happy for 3 years with trust power and only now is an issue.
Are you having a bad day??

If you are looking for an alternate ISP with a public IP address so you can use the Xbox I can recommend 2 Degrees personally.
Helpful CS the few times I called. and no real issues in 10+ years.
However as others have said if you can get a static IP from trust power that will resolve that issue.

Otherwise sorry can't really help. Don't know if it would be the router or the UFB is at fault.

It’s statistically unlikely to be the UFB, although I never say never.

@ChrisFair I’m sure TrustPower have done adequate testing of the Fibre but a second opinion never hurts. If you would like to send us a Private message with your address I will give it a once over.

I’m not personally acquainted with the TrustPower model. Did you get a new modem with the switch to Fibre? Perhaps its faulty. Or if you are still using the old one possible config issue. Did the TrustPower rep get you to try a different modem? ^Richard

Hi Chris,

Sorry to hear you are having issues.

In regards to the Double NAT, as others have mentioned your UFB connection may have CG-NAT enabled which could cause this, but we can disable this to give you a Dynamic Public IP free of charge to try resolve this.

If you would like, you can PM me your account number and I'd be more than happy to take a look into this and the modem issues for you. I can also organise for someone to give you a callback at a time that suits you should extra troubleshooting be required.

Thanks, Tane.

Is the dynamic public IP always free? Why do you use CG-NAT?  Port 25 unblock is [rolling eyes] still common, which CG-NAT will also not support.

EDIT Great that you are supporting here! I'm not nagging!

The reason they use CGNAT is that it's an easy way for them to manage IPv4 exhaustion. Most of their customers won't notice the difference, and the 1% of customers that want a public IP can get one if they just ask.

I suspect more ISPs will switch to a model of opt-out CGNAT to manage IPv4 address exhaustion over the coming years.
