Hi all,

So we are looking at buying a house in a Waikato town, I see on the Chorus map we are on the edge of the VDSL area. I looked at gis.geek website and see the cabinet is about 450m from the house (if you walked to the end of the street and around the corner)

When we looked at the house I asked to do a speedtest, and did only one quickly and the result was 15mbps (more than our existing house so happy anyway). They had a Spark Huawei HGxxx something modem from memory.

So I guess my question is - would this house likely be already on VDSL, or can ADSL reach that speed? The owners were an older couple and didnt really use the internet so didnt know anymore.

They just had the modem plugged into a original wall jack, does VDSL require additional work to the house to get it, or is it just a matter of the telco flicking a switch and using the correct modem?

Thanks for any advice on what I can expect!

Your best bet to ask a provider to run a prequal.

Chorus's website will also return very much the same result - If the customer still has a connection attached, it will show current connected rate and service type too.

ADSL2+ is perfectly capable of 15Mbps. Max speed on ADSL2+ is 24Mbps.

VDSL no longer require work at the house, it sometimes require work at the cabinet but most of the time can be enabled via a keystroke.

Thanks, that website say that both adsl and vdsl may be available. We currently only get 8mbps where we are on a good day, so anything more is going to be welcomed!

Thanks, that website say that both adsl and vdsl may be available. We currently only get 8mbps where we are on a good day, so anything more is going to be welcomed!

Should also give you a speed or predicted speed, if it's not giving you that flick me a DM and i'll pull the numbers for you.

Just to qualify that, work may not be required at the house, but more often than not it is beneficial, in terms of both reliability and throughput.

Just to qualify that, work may not be required at the house, but more often than not it is beneficial, in terms of both reliability and throughput.

Thanks, yes I understand that is possible. I installed a master filter in our current home on the adsl and got a bit more speed in doing so. Cheers

If you did a speedtest that will return a lower speed than the modem is synchronized to the line.

Manual came back pretty decent, but what was physically synced on VDSL on both sides of the property is even more desirable.

Almost a perfect ADSL2+ line too currently, Lucky bugger!

Will certainly be a nice line until fibre is delivered.

Hi all, just an update, we have moved in to the house now and after waiting a couple of weeks to have the phone put on we are finally connected to VDSL for the last couple days.

Speedtest currently dl speed of around 24mb/s (althought last night was down to 14 for some reason, I did plug in another 2nd phone in the garage so whether the filters dodgy and can cause issues?)

I understand over the next week the speed may improve as it settles in? Hopefully as @hio77 found out that the neighbors are on 50m/bit connections.

No one had to come to the property to do anything and we just have standard filters on the phone jacks. I would of liked to install a master filter like I did in my last house, but after a quick look am not sure how I would do it in this place. House was built 1990 and the basement garage has no ceiling so whether I can find the wires to tap in to or not.

Hi, get a master filter installed, and possibly a fresh or checked line from the demarc to the modem, check with @coffeebaron who does filter installs. If your neighbours are getting closer 50Mb/s and your only half that then chances are you have wiring issues.

Note that using filters at each of the phones (as opposed to a single master filter) does not get around the tap line issue.

Note that VDSL is far more sensitive to home wiring issues than ADSL(2+) is.
