I live semi-rural just north of Albany Auckland with 2mBit ADSL with no upgrade ever likely to happen. However I have line of sight to Whangaparaoa where fibre has been installed.

This website https://link.ui.com/ suggests a 100Mbits PtP link is possible with about $250 worth of Wifi gear.

Now I just need to find a friendly person with fibre in the Manly area who is willing to share some band width....

Heh, not all of the Peninsula has it yet. I'm still waiting and I'm on the main road. Also might want to specify you want someone on the south side of Manly :)

Using wifi gear of any sort will introduce latency as well, so if you game or use anything that relies on a low ping, it wont be great.

Just being able to download game updates in a reasonable time would be good

Hi, typical latency on a 5GHz UniFi PtP is around 5-10ms and can be less if its just PtP and no other clients, if its connected to a fibre connection that should be giving 1-2mS to Auckland datacentres, then there is still no comparison to a xDSL that will have a minimum of 15mS or more typically 30ish depending on what interleaving is in place.

I do think it's worth mentioning that there are risks to whomever provides the uplink to you. Unless it's a dedicated circuit you are paying for directly, then if the share with your connection, anything you do, illegal or otherwise, becomes the responsibility of the connection holder.

Also, given the internet connection itself is remote and likely not accesible to you directly, any internet issues, power outages etc or equipment failures become an issue for you, as you rely on a third party for resolution.

There are other considerations. I wouldn't say don't do it, if I were you, I'd be trying too, but so you understand it's more complex.

I'd be looking to setup this sort of arrangement with an existing friend where there is existing mutual trust.

I'd never ever enter into an arrangement like you are looking for with a stranger sorry!
Maybe try RBI if you just need short bursts of data.

Very valid points. A separate uplink would be the best solution - I am not sure if second fibre is possible without huge additional installation costs.

I am happy to live with the other potential issues. Ideally the owner of the link would be a fellow geek who would be happy to do the odd power cycle if required.

I do have Vodafone 4G broadband with 120GB per month mainly for my wife to work from home.

You know what I mean there, takes a bit of trust..
On the flip side, someone here might not mind livening up the second port and taking a contribution towards power usage etc.
