Hey, I would like to know how much difference there is in latency/ping between Satellite, Wireless and Wired broadband. I currently use satellite broadband (ipstar), and i get super high ping in gaming (normally around 1000ms). I'm thinking about changing to Wireless broadband using the Kordia Extend Network. I just want to make sure if this will reduce my ping level or not in online gaming.

And also, if it does, will there be a difference between wireless broadband and wired broadband (cable, adsl) in terms of ping/latency for online gaming? If so, how much? Thanks.

It definitley will reduce your ping by a good 800ms....Wireless will give you pings of 20ms ~ 50ms but wireless also gets spikes sometimes but atmost those spikes will be ~200ms....Wired broadband is the best option but if it's not available in your area then wireless is the way to go....

Do whatever you want to do man.

I'm a gamer at home and use an IPStar connection at work from time to time.

Due to the fact the satellite is 36,000km from earth there is going to be more latency, as is the case with all satellite connections.

At less than 40km distance a Kordia connection is going to deliver shorter ping times, at best 80ms inside NZ which is still twice you would expect from ADSL. If your game server is US based you can add another 100ms to that.

IPStar is optimised for upload and download; we tested a 1mb upload once which is 8 times faster than my home ADSL upload speed. IPStar is available almost everywhere, Kordia about 10% of the country and ADSL only 6km (or

less) from an exchange.

It depends on what you grade your overall internet experience on, if gaming is your highest priority, you may find you have a better experience at a site within range of ADSL.

Haha, um, well, WoW was bearable for a while. WoW is actually quite playable with a latency of 1000ms haha.

I'm getting Wireless installed tomorrow! Couldn't get it to install last week beacuse one tree was blocking the signal from cambridge... how gay was that lol. So yea, had to get it removed.

Yeah, um, the tower in cambridge is about 22km away from my house (according to the installer). Just wondering how much latency that could give me?

I also use the Kordia Extend service and my transmitter site is almost 40km away.

The pings as reported by the Windows PING utility to my ISP are very stable at an average of 64ms.  Best 49ms, Worst 70ms over 100 pings just tested now.

HTH,

Grant.
