Note : This is not a complaints thread :D Just more of a diary so people can see what the process is like these days :)

So, signed up with BigPipe today, got the ball rolling on fiber install.

Then get email advising I need to get consent from neighbors because of the works involved........   ???

Yes its a shared drive, BUT the install is an aerial installation (or so I've been advised in the past by Chorus), on the opposite side of the property away from the driveway - also the neighbors phones run that way as well.

Let the fun times begin ;)

My neighbor wont care, and I'll do it anyway, but think Chorus do need to check things occasionally in their system ;)

Looks like the exisiting lines for both you and your neighbour are fed from from the same pole? That might be why.

It doesn't matter what the physical layout of the property is. As long as you're in a ROW/MDU you'll get that consent email.

Since you have an overhead install, it should be category 1 and no actual consent will be required.

Just as i was getting excited for you moving to a real provider ;)

Plenty of actual "real" providers out there who peer, offer IPv6, one-off Static IP fees and react quickly to changes in the market like offering Enables 200/20Mbit free upgrade from day one. I would say this change is just to a "standard" provider. Being called a "real provider" is reserved for the elite who don't charge the same price as other providers do for a 60gb cap.

BigPipe are about half way there however they lost points by removing IPv6 - I'd call them a "better than Spark" provider based on price at the expense of phone support.

@xpd this sounds like my UFB install where they had to get approval from everyone down the shared driveway even though the fibre was actually at my letterbox, right outside of my house - it shouldn't be a problem. I'm sure @ChorusNZ could potentially chime in also.

dude... he's looking at bigpipe, not spark. Half your points are all batting at Spark.

but point taken, your not a fan.

LOL, now now guys ;)

Well, the neighbor came up last night and said hes filled out the online form, so all good there so far. He didn't quite understand why it was required either but anyway.

I did say to him it is possible that when they do my line, they may run fiber down to his property as well, so if they do want it in the future, its minimal work for them then.

what happened to big pipe? I can remember a time where every man and his dog here would recommend them as a good ISP and drop the ol' "use my referral link in my signature"

@xpd my cousin was just in a similar situation as yours and it all happened surprisingly quick.. all within a couple of weeks of the first tech coming out to scope the install.. hope you're excited, fibre rocks !

You're doing much better than me, ordered 18th of March, received consent email same day (shared driveway with one other house), Chorus phone call on the 25th saying they would need to cut the driveway. Nothing since.

Now there’s a blast from the past. I remember this picture :-)

@DarkShadow yes, so far the only actions taken on this order have been automated. As its classed MDU the system automatically stages it to consents and a manual task is set up for a designer to look into how we will actually connect the property.

@xpd from memory the feeding pole is part of our wider infrastructure so should already have a FAT installed during the rollout.

Going from experience the MDU team will almost certainly end up deciding we can connect you as an SDU (single dwelling) without the need to go through build as there is existing aerial easement for the copper cable (which will be replaced by the Fibre).

@pknz happy to take a look at this for you if you want to send us a DM with your address.

^Richard

@chorusnz   LOL, yeah, Im regular annoyance ;)

"FAT" ? Fiber.....  something something....  :)

Im hoping too it'll be looked at and they'll tick it off straight away and move on it sooner than later :)

@dt I am now I decided to go for the 100/100. Am getting 70/30 on my VDSL, but having that extra kick for the upload will be great for live streaming games etc :D

@pknz Thankfully nothing has to be cut/dug up for my install. I'm just hoping they can put the ONT etc where I want, but will have to discuss with them during scope phase I guess. If it ended up being one of their "one day/visit " turn arounds, I'll be super stoked.

😁 sorry FAT = Fibre Access Terminal. It’s a distribution point we attach to poles which provides us access and breakout of the individual tubes from our main (Thicc) cable along the street.

We only got your order yesterday so it may be a day or two before someone is able to pick it up. But once the MDU team have it in hand should be pretty quick from there 🤞.

That's an incredibly quick process! My scope date (today) was given 4 weeks ago. Can't believe how speedy yours will be - are you in an area that's had fibre for quite a while?
