Our property is finally getting fibre after suffering with ADSL for years.

For context, I'm in Whangaparaoa, Auckland.

So I've been looking around at unlimited fibre plans and they all seem to be about the same ($90-$105 / month range with $10/mo router).

They all promise the same speeds, for similar prices, with nothing much I can see that separate the offers.

In the past I've had some really poor experiences with support from ISPs (but to be fair to them, those were mainly Chorus's fault).

So, since they all seemingly offer about the same service and price, my main concern is getting an ISP with the most reliability and best customer service.

Are there any fibre providers that stand above the rest on customer satisfaction? A quick google search hasn't come up with anything definitive.

Spark/Bigpipe, Voyager, 2degrees

And not necessarily in that order. Pick one that suits you in pricing. Service is great from all of them.

I always find that a weird one though, like for residential broadband, how often do you really need to call your ISP? I would suggest "just once" is the answer to get it connected.

Hello fellow coastie :)

We've just had fiber enabled on our stretch of Whgp Road.

I went with BigPipe as they were only ones who could offer me 100/100 and a static IP without my having to sell a kidney.

So it depends on the services you want from the ISP, what you want to pay. The only main difference behind the scenes, is their support team, and their routing. If not a gamer/latency freak, then routing isnt a major.

If I just wanted standard 100/20 and a phone, I wouldve stayed with Voyager, had nothing but great service from them.

Depends what you call 'good'. Compared with running your network on RFC2549 based tech, yea they're excellent!!

Edit: Sorry, RFC 1149. 2549 adds QoS

I am very happy with BigPipe and the one-off charge for Static address.

If you are going with a fast plan I recommend that you also get an Edgerouter.

Myself and two colleagues have just installed them and we have all experienced improved speeds.

Edgerouter plus one or two ceiling mounted AP's gives the perfect home solution.

Aside from some initial teething issues with my sign up with Orcon, they’ve been flawless for the past several years.

(One outage I barely noticed doesn’t count with that record. )

@xpd  This was a fresh UFB install - how long did it take BigPipe to arrange this?

Older GZ posts have suggested that BigPipe was slower to provision UFB than other ISPs (otherwise, no complaints).

Aren't all fibre connections essentially given a static IP nowadays?

Depends on the RSP. The simple answer is no - many have moved away from static (and public IP) address towards CG-NAT
