My work is in Wellington, with Chorus UFB provided by One Communications (NZ Technology Group). I often work from home and connect via VPN to RDP. Home is Kapiti, which is a Chorus UFB area. Not sure where the Kapiti handover is - might be Palmerston North (IIRC, could be thinking of xDSL). I'm getting fibre soon, so keen to choose an ISP that will get me the lowest latency to work.

I don't know too much about this stuff, but couldn't see One Communications or their parent listed as peering at the WIX. WASP communications is part of NZ Technology Group and seems to offer residential internet, but there is no pricing on their website for UFB and naked unlimited ADSL is $115/month, so not very cost competitive when I could get 100/20 UFB through 2degrees for $75/month (with pay monthly discount).

Can anyone enlighten me about One Communications/NZ Technology Group's peering, or point me in the right direction to find out for myself?

Is there a publicly facing server at your workplace that we could run trace routes to?

2degrees have good peering, so consider signing up with them. If you dont manage to get a definitive answer as to who your work ISP peers with.

Thanks - so all of their peering is in Auckland. That means pretty much any ISP would be fine (except maybe Spark/Vodafone as they charge for peering) as my traffic will have to go Wellington-Auckland-Wellington

If as a provider they are routing everything to auckland, i doubt your going to see much difference between any RSP tbh.

Looking at their peering tables, i'd probably suggest a vocus based RSP?

Route for spark looks to go over vocus but the return path is over somewhere else. (outside of spark control as it's return)

Vodafone follow exactly the same path, although with a better return path.

Both handing off from vocus to nztechologygroup at mdr.

Here is a traceroute from a Slingshot (Vocus) connection. Ignore the ping times, it's over WiFi and possibly some routers slow at routing ping packets. But you can see it goes straight to their network from Vocus. I presume return path would be similar. Suggestion above to go with a Vocus RSP makes sense.

Thanks guys. Looks like Vocus would best but only marginally over a well-peered ISP like 2degrees. Given past experiences with Slingshot/Orcon service and the fact that their plans are $85/mth, I'm inclined to go 2degrees.

2degrees have very good NZ peering and are priced well - you won't be disappointed.

My work is in a similar situation - I use a VDI instance to my works datacentre and find I have a better experience working from home than at work on the same MacBook Pro over WiFi.

I am a partner in NZTech Group.

Can run a traceroute for you.

Yes we can do residential internet.

I think Kapiti would be via a chorus tail extension to wellington and I think we have a rack in wellington. So rather than going via a peering in auckland and back down again, you would be best to stay within the nztech network which means your shooting straight down to wellington rather than up to auckland and back again.

Alternatively we peer with vocus or anyone at AKL-IX
