I have 100/20Mbps fibre.

With the Windows Speed Test app, I usually see 105/26Mbps during the day but mid evening speed drops to 20/11.

This mid evening download speed is a lot worse than the 30Mbps download speed I used to get with VDSL.

Is this sort of mid evening speed drop to be expected on fibre?

Time to talk to my ISP or upgrade to Gigabit fibre?

Testing to a speedtest.net server on your ISP's own network? Using wired? No-one else uploading stuff or streaming at the same time on your network?

There's your problem. You're probably testing to a server that's off your ISPs network - Try manually selecting a nearby server. Does your ISP host a speedtest server? If the comment above is correct and you're on VOyager I can see they have a server in Auckland (I just got 858/250 to that server)

Also, PURELY in the interests of troubleshooting, try disabling ipv6 and retesting.

LAN IPv6 disabled... 81/37 now.... upload speed very fast...

Ok selected Voyager Auckland... Speedtest now shows 99/42... pretty good...

I did not think of using Voyager Auckland because my Voyager Fibre service is provided from Wellington somewhere...

Earlier speed tests appeared to pick up City Link Wellington as the best test server...

I can't speak for Voyager, but many ISPs will route everything through their "head office", making Auckland closer than Wellington.

That will be because many / most smaller ISPs only have a single or pair of BNGs that route all traffic for billing, IP address management and various other purposes. So it is backhauled by Chorus or other backhaul providers at layer 2 to their BNG.

Hence why the "first hop" from your router when you are with some smaller ISPs will always be 20ms if you are in Wellington and 40+ if you are in Christchurch / Dunedin or further away.

The internet doesn't get terminated until you hit their BNG as that is the router between your broadband router and the "internet".

Glad you sorted it @Gordy7.

It's already been touched on, but I'll clarify from a Voyager POV.

Speedtest is a great tool - but you really need to know the endpoint you are going to is: (This kind of goes for any speed testing tool really!)

a) capable of handling a large amount of capacity (both in network, and server)

b) has an optimal path between it .. and your provider

Because nearly anyone can be a Speedtest provider, it's hard to know sometimes if the above is being

met.

Yes there is criteria from Ookla, but in the case of "a", there's been many occasions where it's clearly not being adhered to.

Most of the time, it's not obvious to the end-user if a) and b) are being met .. which doesn't help the end user.

If a customer was to call our helpdesk, we typically refer them to one of the following.

* Spark - AKL

* Voyager - AKL

* VocusGroup NZ - AKL

While there are many others can yield a great result, these 3 are the ones who seem consistent to our network - and are our go-to regardless of location.

A snip from an earlier Voyager email:

Under VDSL, you were terminated on our Auckland BNG – with Auckland IP ranges.

When you move to UFB, your termination region was shifted to Wellington – where AKL IP’s don’t work. (v4 wont either, hence why your IP changed there too)
