Hey guys, Just a short post. Anyone out there using TrustPower gigabit fiber? Ever heard of CGN? Carrier grade NAT? Got mine 'turned off' (lol) by support operator at the same time as enabling static IP for connection. Much improved performance.

Warm regards

Hi yes most of us around here are farmiliar or have deployed CG-NAT, am interested in what performance aspect you found improved, even on a Gig connection I am not sure you would notice any improvements.

Cheers

Cyril

The connection went from being thrown in the wastebasket and given up on to the fastest the installer had seen..

The CGN that Trustpower uses will not affect speed, there must have been something else going on.

CG-NAT has no ability to affect your speed. It's merely an IP address thing.

The only exception of course would be if your only defintion of "speed difference" is torrenting where having CG-NAT (or even a public IP address with no ports open) may impact performance.

To be fair, badly done CGN can affect speed (insufficient ip resources or poor hardware on the CGN device), but the kit Trustpower uses is high end hardware so is unlikely to cause an issue.

Ahh sure.. My comment was more in relation to TrustPower - I know they're not using a low end Mikrotik to power their core. 😃

I expect they have nothing but the finest Linksys, Netgear and D-Link equipment powered by multiple redundant hamster wheels :-P

As others have said CG-NAT should have not impacted your speed. By default we also don't enable CG-NAT for FibreMax customers, so if you were getting this, its possible it wasn't set on the right speed from our side and was fixed up at the same time the Static IP was applied - Either way, glad to hear that it is all sorted.

If you have any issues - Feel free to send me a PM :)
