This just popped up on Stuff, haven't seen anything about it previously.

TL;DR, possibility of Auckland being a hub on a new cable from China to Chile. Interesting stuff, although obviously the potential involvement of Huawei may kill it as it did with <insert name of cable before Hawaiki that ran into issues>

Wonder if they would run it via the chattam islands on its way to South America, no need to rely on Satellite then

That would be an excellent idea.

If they put in a cable from Auckland to the Chathams, maybe the NZ government could pay for a cable from the Chathams to Christchurch or Dunedin: that would give a redundant path keeping the country linked even if (when? ☹) The Big One flattened Wellington

There is already a cable out of Levin to Nelson.
Plus I believe that transpower plan to put in more under sea fibre.
The Chathams is one heck of a detour and means you can't use standard off the shelf 40km optics.
Edit. You know it's 812km (well Google says so) so it's the same distance as Wellington to Whangarei.
The business case for less than 600 people just doesn't stack up.
