Hi

Just wondering if any of you are noticing issues with internet connectivity that might be related to the fire at Sky complex.
We had our customers report sites not being available, DNS failures and timeouts.
Here at office we have lost DNS for AWS console domains
Connecting via VPN providers fixes the issues.

So far I can see that all major ISPs are affected in some way (judging by customer reports).
Any insights?

Thanks,
Damian

Id highly doubt the fire is affecting anything - its a construction site, not the Sky Tower data room :)

I've not had any issues on the multiple connections I use at work (DI, Spark, Vodafone, BigPipe).

No issues at Skytower. I can confirm that because we have plenty of gear in there.

Very few of the big RSPs have any significant equipment in there now. It's not a key site like it used to be.

Not unless the black smoke is giving some of the wireless links "rain fade".

Seems unlikely...

Looks like all issues are related to AWS.
Their status page reports DNS outage that has spilled over to major platforms like Atlassian
Coincidence rather than cause then.

Thanks,
D

We are also having issues with DNS and resolving to AWS.  Changing to non NZ DNS on PCs has made services reachable for us, like you VPN access overseas also fixed the issue.  Hearing crickets from our ISP, although I know for a fact it is not only affecting them.

EDIT: Just saw your post, funny how AWS statuses were all good when it all started and for hours after

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Do any ISPs even still use the sky tower?

It's a neutral peering point which still has it's purposes. It's the only neutral point in Auckland that Vodafone will handover RBI services to wholesalers at for example.

Must be pretty hot packets for being so neutral...

That must have been a fairly significant DDOS attack to impact AWS DNS. They can absorb massive DDOS loads. AWS Shield DDOS mitigation of applications work with their DNS, CDN, load balancers, and public IPs, but attacking a single component I guess there's fewer mitigations in place. As they say, everything fails, all the time.

Vodafone is available on Auckland IX (where we peer) and I have heard they are due to come live in MegaIX.

I don't know the implications for RBI handovers though. It's not really within our sphere of involvement.
