Finally, fibre in our street!
Fibre ordered
Chorus are coming this week. Yet there is just a cable coiled at a lampost 50 m down the road. It will be an overhead install so hoping it's all doable as the order is "fibre in a day".
My question is, will they use an ETP on an overhead install? Or just run the cable into the roof space. I want to run some internal wiring to the ONT, but have no idea what cable they use for this run. Hoping to negotiate some of this with the installer. Any clues on what runs from overhead to the ONT?

Yeah, there is one, but in mine the cable is just wound around a few times to give them slack to join in the future if needed and then goes inside to the ONT on the otherside of the wall.

One last question please

Is the Fibre modem simply a router? i.e. I dont have to use it if I have an alternative. I have been sent the new Spark Smart Modem, which sounds pretty good, but would really like to drive DHCP and IP allocation from my own router.

Chorus will bring an ONT with them and mount it on you wall - you have no choice with this. You have a choice with what router you plug in - the Spark one or a third party router that you provide.

Regarding the install - from what I've seen, they will run it down a conduit to an ONT near ground level, from there it will go inside (either through the exterior wall or under the house)

no you need to ONT which essentially is a dumb modem/media converter changing light to electrical signals, you still need a router after it to route the traffic

It's a 90 year old 2 story house. They won't be running anything down the front of my house! I understand about the ONT, but the supplied modem is just a router, in essence?

You can discuss the options for where to run things with them, but remember that this is a taxpayer subsidized install so they only do the minimum to get you on the network and working. If you want other things done you may have to get your own electrical contractor to run some conduit thru for them to put it thru or else pre cut and drill things and arrange for the make good after the chorus techs have been. They certainly dont go into roof spaces or lift roof etc to get things thru.

They won’t place the etp up high as they won’t splice fibre cable up high, health and safety issues etc

The fibre cable will run from overhead to somewhere down the bottom of your house, how you get them to run it is up to you

Otherwise you’ll have to pay for an overhead to underground install
