I want to suspend approx 80m of outdoor Cat 5e between two buildings (house & office). This is the first time I've run overhead cable so would like to know the most practical way to go about it.

I think you'd need a catenary wire/cable to hang it off, and a UV-proof tube to run it through, and some fairly serious anchor structures at each end to hold up the catenary. I'd guess it's going to sway quite a bit in the wind, even if you tweak the catenary up quite tight.
Also I'd be worried about earth potential difference between the two ends, if the two ends have different electrical earths.
I'd think this is not really a DIY project, an 80m span is quite l-o-n-g

However I had resigned myself to a Wireless Bridge until a couple of days ago while on another job installing cable in preparation for an ONT I noticed the overhead copper lead-in running from a disused telephone pole to roof.
(The alternative would have been trenching ~50m).

Calculate the standard catenary function y = a cosh(x/a) where y is the y Cartesian coordinate, x is the x Cartesian coordinate, cosh is the hyperbolic cosine function and a is the scaling factor.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
You firstly need to get the thicker, black-coated cat wire - for outdoor use and longer spans.
Generally, you just use eye hooks and turnbuckles. For a span of this length, get some nice long turnbuckles and put one on each end. You will also want a cat wire strainer - you can use fencing strainers too, but they leave an ugly kink in the wire.
Lay out the span on the ground, and zip tire your cable to it - for longevity use the zip ties with the steel hooky thing (technical term) in them and make sure they are UV stabilised.
Then just string it up, strain it, and tie off to the turn buckles and then crank the turn buckles up a bit. Don't strain it do the point of a "guitar string", you need a nice droop in it for wind movement.
But to reiterate what everyone else said, 80m is a LONG span, like really long for a cat wire. Consider a trench, wireless link, etc.

You dont need to worry about that because ethernet is transformer coupled.
But you are right to raise the issue of transient suppression. Consideration should be given to this, given the cable is going to be elevated.
I think for the distance and the issues of transients fibre should be considered, especially if the term of use is going to be long.

Hi, 80m is way too much, I normally limit at around 15m, also at 80m you should consider fibre to circumvent ground loop and lightning related issues.
As others have said, try a 60GHz link as Frazer linked, they are very good, I have installed a fair few and they work brilliant, but if you have a bill board between, they are a no goer.
