Cable Speed/Reliability in Petone?

Hey all,
Can someone give me a rough estimate (through experience/use) of how reliable/fast Cable Internet would be in central petone?
Been with vodafone DSL for less than a week, and am willing to suffer the early disconnect costs.

Since ~August the cable modem platform has been rock solid after TCL finished their network upgrade. Performance in Petone won't be any different to elsewhere on the network.

With the speed issues that people seem to be reporting with various ISP's at present cable is certainly a vast improvement!

Hi, steves reply above is the current status of Telstras cable, but what exactly is wrong with your DSL connection. All of Petone central and from SH2 across to the river and up through the hut central has been upgraded to ADSL2+ with no cabinets to be installed in this area as all lines are within the 2-2.5km loop length, therefore you should have good DSL performance, purhaps its an issue with your house wiring. What connection speeds are you getting.

Obviously there may also be issues with Vodafone/Ihugs performance as an ISP but thats not a DSL issue.

Speeds ~2000kbps, which is tolerable (was 4.5kbps at my previous address, and i can understand regional differences, exchange loads etc) but it seems really unreliable in quality. Some websites don't load, or load slow (I'm talking major sites, not your DIY server) and while the latency on WoW is within what I've come to expect from being based in the US, it constantly lags and jumps. I haven't unpacked the PS3 yet, I don't want to think about how GTA4 is gonna go.
The general canned response from vodafone is the usual check the settings on the pc/router, which I have done despite the technical information on their website being difficult to find. I've tried the router they supplied and the two I own and so far nothing has made a difference. (as a matter of fact, the modem they supplied seem to make it worse) Pinging servers results in a timeout every 8 or 9 tries, and my attempt to locate the problem through trace has proved fruitless.

If there's any suggestions you can offer, I'd be grateful.

Hi, each and every ISP has speed issues outside of the local loop, either HFC cable or telephone networked. That said most gamers do find TCL cable network good. However a quick look at gpforums will tell you that most gamers dont like Voda/Ihug, so thats probably more your problem than you DSL connection.

2Mb/s sounds very light, what are you modem connection stats, so to get an idea of what connection you can achieve on DSL.

, i get 15 ping to auckland, and 160 ping to us.logon.worldofwarcraft.co, not that i play it.

After a few days of trying, the speed seems to jump around anything from 2-10Mbps (its 4178Kbps atm). Weird access errors have disapeared, but gaming latency is still mostly horrible. And even if its not, still jumps and lags every few seconds and makes things pretty much unplayable.
