Is it possible for the end user or Chorus to factory reset an ONT?

By factory reset I mean either erase everything back to original state or re-apply the settings to the ONT. A friend of mine has a higher upload speed than download speed so we factory reset his modem and that brought the upload speed closer to the download speed but it's not quite there yet so I thought it would be a good idea to reset or refresh the ONT. We have power cycled ONT. Friend is on fibre max.

Ummm what's the issue having a higher upload? I often have this on speed tests but does not impact on anything on our network.

ONT doesn't have any user accessible settings as far as I'm aware, so there's no point / need / way to do a factory reset AFAIK.

Nope, the only way would be to re-provision it.

Because download speed is only 180Mbps and upload speed is 410Mbps. Download speed very slow on 1000Mbps plan.

What does re-provisioning it mean? Chorus doing something on their end without customer needing new ONT or tech visit?

if a factory reset of the modem got you "closer" that would suggest that the issue is from the "modem" forward within the network?

What are you expecting and receiving in reality from the "modem" to a laptop with a wired connection?

How are you testing these speeds? What service and servers? What plan is this connected to? What type of client (laptop, phone, tablet)?

It looks to me your friend might be trying to fix something without knowing what is going on really.

100% the issue is with the devices, the router or the testing methodology not the ONT

And factory resetting the ONT could mean that it loses all the configuration so may need a tech from the LFC to come over and reconfigure it on the spot.

Factory reset of the ONT is not going to help this issue in anyway

Best way to "reset" them is to remove the stupid 12 volt stepdown transformer they come with and hardwire the badboy up directly to 240volts like GOD intended.

They will then go VERY VERY VERY fast for a number of (milli) seconds, then the "magic smoke" will come out.  Sadly once the magic smoke comes out, it's hard to get back in.

The ONT owner will then have to come and replace it with a new one from the "factory".

Tada a factory reset.

[Please note this factory reset will probably cost you a lot of money and also endanger your life]

Or its being reported per the 2d/spark thread posted today also?...

Slow at 130Mbit.

I recall the days I didn't know what hit me going from Jetstart 128k to 256.

As various people have just pointed out, this is almost certainly not an issue with the ONT.

Make sure any speed tests are being done with a wired device directly connected to the router. Exclude any switches, PowerAV gear, etc.

Don't try and test outside your ISP's network or to overseas servers, ideally test only to a server within your ISP's network (e.g. If you are with Vodafone, test to one of the Vodafone speedtest servers)

Ideally try multiple devices, multiple Ethernet cables, and multiple ports on the router.

Last but not least, If it's the same friend you posted about earlier that wanted to buy a Netgear router, try testing with the original Spark HG659 instead.

As everyone said, please don't mess with the ONT.
If you really believe your test methodology is OK and there is an issue with the service, talk to your RSP.

And that's not going to be safe for the tech given the current situation and lockdown.
