Hey team first time poster,

Would just like to hear some positive/negative experiences about the different ISP's people use currently in relation to gaming and more specifically PING.

Please don't lecture me on how ping doesn't affect gaming.

Just interested to see what PING people are getting mainly to Australian or other international servers...TIA

Cheers

Guess you've already been told. What you need is a stable connection, ping is far less relevant these days with online gaming.

You need to explain to us your current connection and access method (WiFi, Ethernet) along with Router and Location for anyone here to really help you. Everyone will be different due to the way physics work and their own personal setup.

This is me anyway testing to the same server. ~30ms is around normal.

As covered many times on Geekzone internet routes are not 100% static 24/7 365 days a year

Gamers that want the lowest ping and still game over Wi-Fi make me LOL

You guys are getting great pings compaired to me for that tesltra sydney sever.

I'm in Auckland on 2degrees UFB (testing via ethernet) and get constantly 147-148ms when I test. I get a 4ms ping to the 2degrees Auckland server so don't think it is due to my end.

I don't game so it is not critical for me, but an wondering why I get a different result.

Also I never see anything close to my line speed when I test to an international server.

Unlike some of the others here I firmly believe that latency DOES matter in gaming, particularly PvP FPS games. However, as others have mentioned ISPS routing isn't static and the upstream routes available are going to vary between ISPs. No ISP is always going to have the best routes to every game, but if you can give a specific set of game servers for us to compare against, we might be able to give you some useful datum.

Hi thanks for above posts,

My current connection is ethernet cable cat5e, my current connection is fine but as I'm moving soon looking to upgrade is possible.. better ping and more stable connections is the dream.

I see one provider "my republic" offers a static ip as part of a "gamers broadband package". This a functional option?

No point worrying about routers as I have only a few devices using wifi and use ethernet for gaming, could be wrong but heard gaming specific routers are a gimmick.

Anyone used or use Orcon or myRepublic?

As per my comment in the other thread, don't go anywhere near My Republic. If you're only looking at those two, Orcon would win. But I'm not a gamer.

ping to australia/sydney really doesn't define too much as there will still be minor differences.

Basically every provider out there will be as low as eachother to most servers though.

It's more when you get to EU or US you see the broad range from providers.

my republics gaming plans are just a gimmick. its just like any other provider giving you a static IP address, its not going to make your pings lower.

I'm on 2degees fibre, in Wellington.

Latency to Sydney is rock steady at 35ms on multiple servers.

The following SamKnows time-of-day chart shows latency over the last month.

From bottom to top:

blue: Auckland
purple: Sydney
pink: San Francisco
orange: Tokyo
yellow: London

Read the blog post in my signature about choosing a provider.

Also don’t go with the cheapest deal. Broadband is not like electricity, it differs between providers. A cheap ISP is not going to have as much investment on their network than a big name ISP. If latency and speed are important then go with one of the bigger providers like 2degrees, Spark, Voyager. Don’t touch MyRepublic.

Like Mr Murphy says above, "just go[ing] for the cheapest deal" is asking for nothing but trouble. Don't go near My Republic, or any provider run by a power company. The few dollars you save every month aren't worth the headache and hassle when things go wrong or you need to change something. Also, Vodafone are particularly bad with these last points as well.
