Hi guys,

Well for the last 3 years, I have been waiting for our exchange to be upgraded (i'm in Whangaparaoa, Auckland).

It seems that we are still waiting!

Who exactly would I be waiting on? and when is this likley to be completed?

Our telecommunication system out here is so damn old that we cant even have CALLER ID!? thats how bad it is.
And the weird thing is, Whangapaora/Stanmore Bay is not exactly a small area. If you take a look on Google maps or something you will see that we are quite a large area.

So does anyone have any information for me? because when  itry and contact my ISP (Slingshot) or Telecom they tell me that they have absolutely no idea and that maybe the only group that does know is Chorus?( I think thats spelt right), which of course, they can not give me the number to because apparantly its an internal department.

Try sticking your address into this page . The ADSL equipment and telephone exchange aren't the same so you'll still be stuck with no Caller ID on your standard Telecom phone line.

Hi there, Thanks for you reply.

No I was aware that they are two different things, I was just giving an example of the crap we have to deal with out here.

But thanks, I will take a look now :)

Or you could look at it another way, 20 odd years ago your area was one of the 1st to be upgraded. Too bad you got stuck with it.

Hi Aaroona,

We have installed our equipment in your local excahnge, so you should be able to get ADSL2+ from us.

The only caveat is that a lot of homes in Whangaparoa are fed from roadside cabinets (not the main exchange) becuase of the long copper loop lengths. You can see if you are able to get our ADSL2+ products by entering your phone number on our website.

Yes, our '+' plans are our unbundled ADSL2+ plans, so you are eligible.

Okay so if the plus sign is there, its guaranteed that I will get ADSL2+ as opposed to what i've getting currently? (which I believe is just ADSL [I get a connection rate of: 5900 down and 730 up])

If this is the case, I will be signing up tomorrow!

Yep, if the + sign is there it means you will be connected to our equipment, which only delivers ADSL2+. So yes, you will get ADSL2+.

I assume you'll also be able to give him caller ID etc? As his phone line would be ported to your system

Not being able to give you a number for Chorus seems pretty bizarre (especially if Telecom told you that).

http://www.chorus.co.nz/home

you can find out all sorts of stuff here, such as cabinetisation schedules, exchange upgrades etc.

http://www.chorus.co.nz/enhancing-the-broadband-network

http://www.chorus.co.nz/cabinet-notices

and if youw ant to check when Telecom will be upgrading your exchange and/or adding cabinets you can check here
http://www.telecom.co.nz/adsltwoplus

Note that you ight be on an ADSL2+ exchange (like me), but if you are further than about 1.5km from the exchange (like me)you probably won't get ADSL2+ speeds until you get cabinetised regardless of which ISP you sign up with (like me - I'm on Mayoral Drive Exchange, but won't get cabinetsied until Jan 2012)

If you are getting 6Mb/s now then moving to 2+ will not see any improvement unless Orcon are offering a short copper tail.

Hi Cyril,
My connection rate is 5900kbps
The guy I spoke with at Orcon says that they can provide better speed for me on ADSL2+

Orcon/Vodafone on their LLU networks i believe decrease the port SNR to 6-7ish which as you know increases sync rate, so their customers do see an improvement in most cases.
