Hi guys,

I understand there are some debates going on regarding the quality of Xnet

I am currently on Xnet's FS/128k but consistently gets only 1.5MB/s and 128k up from speed tests (Local)

Can some please have a look at my line statistics below to see if this is the reasonable limit for my line or is the bottleneck really at Xnet

Hi, your line speed for you attenuation is very low, you should be able to achieve more like 5Mb/s on a 45dB attenuation. Have you done an isolation test, ie disconnected all phones and other devices from your home wiring and connected your modem at the first master jack. How many phones/faxs/sky modems are installed, do you have a monitored security alarm.

1.5Mb/s is all you will get on a line that is syncd at 1.7Mb/s, you need to sort that out first.

Done an isolation test and line still sync' at about 1.8M

What should it realistically be sync'n at?

A line of 45dB attenuation (assuming that is correct) represents around 3.5km of line and should be capable of achieving around 5Mb/s (plus and minus a bit).

You say you have done an isolation test, but have you actually attempted that will all wiring removed except for the inbound cable going to the first master jack and all other wiring post that removed. Assuming that still gives no change talk to your ISP to deploy Chorus to check the line and maybe reset your port.

I generally have found 45dB to get speeds more in the 3-4Mbps range; though obvious every line & router is different.

Portege, what model of router do you have? I'm guessing an old gen Dynalink?

Yes this is an older gen modem. Upgrading may give you some improvement, but as above part of the issue may be wiring etc. Where abouts is this connection; street / area? Will see what other info I can find for you.

I am located in Meadowbank, off Meadowbank road

It is a relatively old house - 50 years old? We dont have much plugged in, except for a cordless and a fax machine, all of which were unplugged during the test

Thanks in advance

I don't know that area to well as I'm a Westie, but it does look like you are located towards the edge of the exchange boundary. Either Remuera or St Heliers exchange - both ADSL2 enabled.

So really depends on how much time and money you want to put into improving this. I'd first upgrade the router and see how that goes, then upgrade to a full install.

I'm usually in the city a couple of times a week, so if you would like a site visit, send me a PM and I we'll discuss further.

Thanks for that mate, I'll look into some ADSL2 router upgrades

I'm only back in Auckland for three months and after that I'm back to London where we have a very fast BT ADSL2 line

So really not that big of a hassle if I cant want youtube, or youporn :P
