House was built early 1900's so I am not sure what cable has been used or when it was put in.

Cable 1 from street to master jack is 4 wires: black, orange, yellow, white

Cable 2 from master jack to slave jack is 4 wires: blue, brown, orange/white, blue/white

How should cable 1 join to cable 2? How should cable 2 join to phone jack?

Thanks in advance

Could it be that the 1st cable is pairs 1 Black & Yellow, 2 Brown & White
and 2nd cable is Blue & Blue-white, Orange & Orange-white?

I'd expect Black & Yellow connected to Blue & Blue-white and assuming 2wire sockets, 1 wire to each terminal strip.

What is the real question?

Hi, as per Bung's comments, I think you are experiencing a colour shift, purhaps you should slow down, it might reduce that effect :)

Anyway Bung has explained what pairs will be what

its possible that you still have the old master/slave wiring based on those colours

it it is then the following colours were used

Red to 2, Blue to 3 (Ring) White to 5

If the M/E Jacks are still in your house then these should be removed

I will check..

Getting ahead of myself.. My adsl modem is currently running off the piggybacked jack point which is furthest away from the 1st jack point. Is that bad?

If I wanted to future proof for vdsl (not that I plan to get it) How is cat5 cable wired? Does each jack point run through the same cat5 cable using its own twisted pair which are then all joined to the black and yellow wires at the termination point?

Not in the street, ultra fast fibre map says outside coverage area

Are you on naked broadband or do you also have phones? You should have a single cat5 from the external black/yellow to your modem. If you have phones, any jacks for them should be isolated from the modem wiring with a master splitter at the external connection. If you are never getting fibre maybe check the wireless options.

I have phones. Adsl speed is ok, Rural waikato. Just thought if I am going to mess with it and run new wire it would be worth making it capable of vdsl.

No cat 5 at the moment, just the 4 wire blue, brown, orange/white, blue/white joined to the external and all the phone jacks piggybacked from each other with the modem being the furthest one. No master splitter, just adsl inline filters.

Does your internal cable have "HOMELAN" 2 PAIR branding? I've looked at a piece here and while the solid orange paired with the orange/white doesn't look as bright orange as the stripe it is not choc biscuit brown.

You will get some improvement putting in a master splitter. Whether it is worth it would depend on ease of running a cable to your modem if your adsl speed is already adequate.

If its Homelan then its essentially a two pair cat5e, so will give you same VDSL performance as a full cat5e cable, purhaps a photo for us to confirm. If you want to ensure the wiring is fully good for xDSL you also need to confirm its a direct (non split) run from the lead in to the modem, can you confirm that, and where do you intend to put the modem, at the master or slave.

How is the master jack wired currently, again a photo would help.

Based on the fact you are in Rural Waikato I would recommend getting in touch with @coffeebaron who will sort this out with a proper master filter to ensure your voice and xDSL are properly isolated
