hi
i have a dsl-302g moded connected to the wall(filter) and also connected to a DI-524 wireless router which sends a wireless signal to 1 computer and the other computer is connected to the wireless router via LAN cable.
i can manage to get a static ip address only when i disconnect the wireless router and use the LAN cable witht he modem only but now, i want to get a static ip address on both my wireless signal and the lan cable on the wireless modem.
does anybody know how to do this?
thanks

First off you probably have double NAT occuring. Both devices probably have DHCP enabled so are conflicting.

You need to decide what device is going to run the DHCP server - if it's the existing modem you need to disable NAT & DHCP in the wireless router. If you want the wireless router to do this you need to disable it in the existing modem.

Normally you would run a wireless router in bridged mode as an AP sitting behind a modem which handles the DHCP.

You also talk about static IP addresses - if you want a static IP you set these in the computer and are NOT issued by the router. To set a static IP you do this in your TCP/IP properties.

If he is double natting, dhcp wont be a problem.

1) Disconnect the 302g and the DI-524 so they are not connected.

2) Set up your dsl-302g as per normal so when you plug a computer into it, it works and allows you to connect to the internet. This is probably already working so just need to test it.

3) Reset the DI-524 by holding the the reset button down for 20 seconds on the back while it is turned on and not connected to anything.

4) Wait 30 seconds and then plug your computer into the DI-524 - dont plug the di-524 into anything else.
Log into its web admin. You will find out how to do this in the instruction booklet provided.
  - Usually done by opening internet explorer and going to http://192.168.0.1/ username pass admin / admin
Find the wireless setup options in the admin website. Set them up using a password. If you dont know what all the options mean, just choose wep, 64bit and enter a 10 digit number into the first code box. Apply. Back to the system tools, save and reboot the modem again.

5) Find the DHCP setting option and turn it off. You may need to save and reboot under the system > Tools menu of its web admin website.

6) Now plug the DI-524 and the 302g together using a network cable. Dont use the wan port on the DI-524 - just use one of the normal computer ports labeled 1,2,3,4. Just to be sure DONT USE THE WAN PORT or it will double nat.

7) Restart your computer. It should now have internet access. Unplug it from the DI-524 and connect wirelessly. Internet access should continue to work.

To sum up what we did
1) We stopped double natting by connecting the boxes in parallel rather than in series from a networking point of view.

2) In parallel, DHCP would have been conflicting so we turned it off on the 524

3) This means the 302g issues ip addresses to computers, and assigns itself as the default gateway

4) The 524 is really now slightly more expensive access point. It has all the routing features there but we dont want to use them.

If you ever need to reconfigure the boxes, http://10.1.1.1 should be the 302g and http://192.168.0.1/ should be the DI-524
To configure the di-524 in the future, you will need to manually plug into it, and assign your computer a static ip address of 192.168.0.35 or something from .2-.253

Now if all that is not what you are wanting, and you are auctually after a static ip address on your network, let us know if you are using windows xp or vista and we can give you instruction, or a simple google search will tell you.
(METHOD A) You want to set your static ip address to 10.1.1.230, click in the subnet and leave it as is - will prob put 255.0.0.0 in, and then the gateway will be 10.1.1.1 - primary dns will also be 10.1.1.1, secondary dns will be blank

(METHOD B) Or the harder way is to log into the modem http://10.1.1.1 and reserve the ip address for your computer. This will be different for your wireless or wired connection as the modem will always assign the reserved ip address - making it static (stays the same each time you turn on the pc) by looking in its list of reserved addresses, and the mac addresses.
The mac address is like a serial number for the chip controlling your wired network plug and another chip / mac address will control your wireless so you cant have the same ip address reserved for both. 1 ip relates to 1 mac. I recomend using method A above because it is highly unlikley you will have more than 200 computers connect to your network within a 24 hour period so the dhcp in the 302g will never need to issue an ip address higher than 10.1.1.200

the problem was that i wasn't disabling DHCP and i never knew u had to connect the modems via LAN port :S.
thanks heaps guys.
