Hello Geekzone.

Can any body answer what this might be?
No markings on the plastic cover and on the inside it has two, 'line' & 'inst'.

It was suggested to be a ringer for the POTS land line but there is a lot of meaty solid copper core cables in there.
The house is a 1950's build.

I would like to remove it along with the wall paper then fill the hole.

Pictures were taken with power turned off at the mains board as a precaution.

Cheers all,
Jeremy

@Jawa check by pulling the fuses out (round bits) whether this is still in your phone circuit before removing.

Thanks Stu, this makes sense as it is an aerial fed copper line plus the reason for the heavy duty copper.

Hi Jeremy, I presume you are not or not intending to get any useful xDSL service down an old open wire aerial drop, if you are I strongly recommend you ask Chorus (via your RSP) to replace it with a modern solution.

I know that this is not part of the circuit(now, thanks to this topic) as when I brought and moved into the house the VDSL speed was atrocious. Getting up into the roof space all the phone jacks in the house were connected together by Chocolate Block terminal.

So I dragged a single piece of CAT5e from the Demarc all the way to the jack point for the modem, that bumped the speed up by 15 Mb/s immediately and incrementally increased further over time.

Hey Cyril, Thanks for the suggestion.

I don't believe the aerial cable is that old to be open wire, but it is the black and yellow pair style.

Cheers

Ok, so that lightning arrestor would have suggested possibly an old open wire, I guess its long since been replaced.
