My old man has been experiencing the issue stated above for some time now. Often when he sits at his 'always on' PC he will find it is disconnected from Slingshot. To connect he must take the phone off the hook - if you listen to the line you can hear the modem connecting in the background too...

I swapped out his Dynalink modem with a D-Link 504+ (generic Telecom stock) and replaced the filters but he still gets the same issue. Sometimes he can put the phone back on the hook and the line will remain connected, other times it disconnects as soon as he hangs up.

His PC is connected to the modem via ethernet so it's not a case of dial-on-demand.

If anyone has any insight then I'd be most appreciative.

"if you listen to the line you can hear the modem" - thats not a good thing - get onto his ISP about it, Id suspect going to need an onsite visit. He may require a central filter installed.

Thanks - he's been avoiding having a visit because he's worried about paying a fee. But I can't really see any alternative.

Long as youve tested it every way which you can (ie: take all other devices off the line etc and see what happens) then he should be fine and not get any fee's, but obviously cant be guaranteed either :(

Some contractors are also lazy and will blame your equipment even though youve been through 5 different routers including the model the last contractor recommended etc etc.  (argh bad memories... goto happy place.... Sealed)

Have you tried pluging the modem into another telephone jackpoint?  Sometimes a faulty jackpoint can cause problems like that.  Are you using a telephone extension cable to connect the modem?

Umm.. are you sure he actually has the DSL filter between the phone and the wall? the filter filters our the "DSL Noise" so if you have the filter between the phone and the wall you should not be able to hear it. If the phone does nto have a filter on it you will near the high pitched "DSL" noise..

make sure every phone in the house has a filter between it and the wall and the DSL router does not have a filter.

some filters are like a double adatper which you plug the phone into the output called Phone and the DSL Router into the DSL port.

you can use these which just a phone as well by just plugging the phone into the phone outlet and ignore the DSL one.

Any fault that causes DSL drop when a POTS (Phone) is taken off hook (or on) indicates a unfiltered POTs device on the line, or possibly a faulty Port filter at the exchange (not likely). Is there a monitored alarm? this could also cause such an issue. Also how many filters do you have, much more than 4-5 and things start going bad again.
