Hi All.

I have just changed over from 2 Degrees broadband and VOIP phone to the same on Contact Energy fibre Broadband.  I have retained my AVM FritzBox 7490 router and so I need to know what the settings are supposed to be for the VOIP connection. The internet part is working well, but so far no phone.  I have contacted Contact Broadband for technical assistance, but I am impatient and want to get it sorted ASAP. Please assist.

Cheers

Hi.

The phone provider? If you mean who provides the phone service, I was presuming it was Contact Energy, but I found out they use Devoli for their internet and phone services.

From the contact page

" Yes, we provide homeline services using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). You can add our homeline service from just $10 a month for unlimited national calls not including mobile. Give us a call on 0800 641 502 and we can set this up for you "

Have you called them on the 0800 number?

Pretty unlikely you'll get any support for VoIP setup if not using the supplied router. Can you not use it, even if just as an ATA?

Contact, why would you? Good luck getting support out of them. What was wrong with 2degrees?

@quickymart I was thinking the same thing whhhhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! Talk about digging a hole

@Phazir50 Why did you change from a ISP with good support / pricing and you even get support from 2degrees here on Geekzone?

John if I had to hazard a guess: price. Definitely wouldn't be for support reasons.

Hi All.

In response to 'why?' the answer is entirely price based.  Price is important to me.  So long as the speed is good and consistent and the connection is reliable, all is good.  I expected support service to be worse than with 2 Degrees, not that I have ever asked 2 Degrees for broadband support, but I am reasonably tech savy so I foresee no issues.  I have downloaded the manual for the NetComm router and the requirements in there are readily transferred to my router so I just need the technical details.  "Contact" state that you can use your own router so I took them at their word that it was okay to do so.  Watch this space.

Cheers

But you cannot use your own router if you want their supported voip, unless you can get their router to work behind yours, which is typically not an issue but I suspect not so with the fritz as it lacks appropriate features.

I recommend you don't use contact for voice, move to 2talk or Hero and use whatever ata you like.

As for Contact Internet, my son and his flat chose them based on price, they regret it.

Hi Cyril.

Why do you say I cannot use my router if I want their supported Voip?  I imagine they use industry standard Voip settings which I have no doubt can be configured in the FritzBox.  As for internet, the connection is working just fine, if not slightly better than what I got with 2 Degrees.  Even at supposed busy times of the day I still get 95+ Mb/s on my 100Mb/s plan.

You and others have referred to ATA.  What is ATA or ata?

Cheers

Because the VoIP solution is a managed solution via the autoconfiguration of the supplied router. No manual config is allowed.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Hi as spyware eluded, either they control it or it does not happen, even though its common standard sip, they will not give you credentials .

As per my recommendation move to an independent sip provider such as 2talk or Hero, problem solved.

One of these or similar: https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/marketplace/computers/networking-modems/hubs-switches/listing/3174931852?bof=CrdZyl0F

connects to your LAN and provides a VOIP connection to a normal phone.  If your ISP won't give you the settings, you can use a 3rd party VOIP provider such as Hero

Hi shk292.

Thanks for the info on an ATA.  If I understand how an ATA works, it is not an option for me as I have a number of DECT phones about the place which use my router as the base station.

I will just have to be patient and see what transpires, hopefully tomorrow.

Cheers
