Hello there,

Couldn't find anything on the Internet about this situation ...

BACKGROUND

Chorus have recently installed fibre at our place (though we haven't switched over from copper yet).

The technician installed the ONT (Type 300) quite low down, such that the base is only about six inches from the floor. And the ONT's right-hand side is only about three inches away from a facing wall.

The ONT's position makes it very difficult to see let alone access the buttons and ports on its base; likewise, the sticker with ID and password is on the side facing the wall.

After about half-an-hour of failed attempts, we managed to read the ID/password by squeezing a phone down between the ONT and the wall and photographing the sticker.

And we may be able to see the buttons/ports on the ONT's base by using a small mirror (we haven't got a suitable one to hand at present).

QUESTION

Does the front of the ONT unclip or detach from its housing, so that it can be lifted/turned such that the sticker / buttons / ports are more readily accessible ...? We haven't tried doing anything like that in case we break something ...

Thank Q!

There should be no need to find the password. Why do you need to acces the ONT? All you should be doing is plugging a router into LAN1 and off you go.

ETA: no features of the ONT are used, only that LAN port to connect to your router. You can't use the wifi, etc.

As mentioned there are no accessible aspects to the ont other than plugging your routers WAN port into LAN1 of the ont.

There is no need to login to it as there are no useful aspects that you the home owner can use, it's all managed by Chorus and your RSP.

So what exactly are you trying to achieve

Hello Stu and Cyril!

Thanks so much for your prompt responses.

To answer your questions - when it comes to Comms stuff, we're entirely ignorant, which is why I posted here :)

We downloaded the ONT's PDF Manual and had a read through that, and it said to make a note of the ID/Password, so that's what we did. But if there's nothing to do there, that's great - so thankyou very much for that info.

Regarding Cyril's enquiry about what we're trying to achieve ... it would still be pretty tricky accessing the ONT's buttons/ports on its base, so we were  wanting to find out if the ONT can be unclipped to make that that access just a wee bit easier ...

Thank Q!

Once you switch to fibre, your provider may provide you with a new router (depending on your provider). When they do, you simply plug it in to LAN1 on the ONT and you're away. If they don't you'll possibly have to buy one yourself.

Who is your provider, and what is your current modem?

Our ISP is Snap (now 2degrees), and we're currently still using our copper ADSL connection via Ethernet and a TP-Link TP-8840T modem.

But I understand that 2degrees will supply a replacement modem for fibre at the same time we place an order with them to switch over to fibre.

From what you say, it's thankfully all quite straightforward to switch over, so thanks for that info Stu  - still wondering though, if perhaps there's an easier way to access the ports / buttons on the ONT's base, as at the moment it looks like we'd have to use a combination of a mirror and quite a bit of fumbling about, as we can't actually see the base because it's so very close to the floor!

Thank Q!

It sounds like the installers weren't overly considerate. Unfortunately, you're best to just use a mirror or phone camera (or feel your way around) to locate LAN1 and plug in the cable that goes to the new router. There are no buttons to worry about, other than perhaps the power button, if it isn't currently in th eon position. That should be easy enough to deal with as it's the largest of the buttons and is a push button. Once it's on, you shouldn't need to worry about any of the buttons.

Here's the layout, and you can feel your way around. Again, once it's up and running you don't need to touch the ONT. https://www.chorus.co.nz/q/model-type-300

To add, 2Degrees should offer you a new Fritz!Box router. If they ask, say yes. Your old modem is history.

Ah OK ... yes, the phone camera in selfie mode should work - hadn't thought of that (even though we'd actually already done that for the sticker - doh!).

And thanks Stu for that link, that should come in handy - I've voted your last post as the answer we were looking for.

OK Then,
All The Best!

Just came across that GZ thread about someone trying to sell a Chorus ONT on TradeMe, and - very handily - the listing included a photo of the rear of the ONT ...

Looking at that photo ... as the ONT has slide-on slots for the mounting screws, it looks entirely possible to detach (carefully) the ONT from the wall without affecting the cabling behind it.

Even so, I think we'll stick with the phone/mirror approach!

What that doesn't show is the fibre coming from the ETP outside, since that unit isn't connected.

Absolutely it's possible to take it off it's mount, it's just not something that anyone who isn't a Chorus or other authrorised/qualified tech should, or needs, to be doing.

Yes, that seems very sensible and we'd entirely agree Stu ... point taken

Still - handy to know though, as a useless piece of trivia :)

Thank Q!
