So the starlink order is coming through but now my parents think they can get fibre as its been installed across the road, any body else done this so I can give them a ball park cost of the fibre (I assume many $$$) vs the starlink

I'd estimate its about 100 meters to the otherside of the highway

Free if its part of UFB or, if you have to ask the price, Sir can not afford the price (many threads on this, 10,s to 100's of thousands - yes for one house).

Assuming this is RBI fibre (and not just "fibre") I'd take a pick somewhere between $50k - $100k. You can tell if you're in an RBI fibre area by looking at the Chorus coverage map.

The only way to know a price is to submit a request. There are so many variables it's really a bit like asking how long a piece of string is!

As above, it ain't going to be cheap. I've seen some other posts on GZ with regards to costs, I recall someone got fibre installed for about 13-14k, which is the absolute best case you are likely to get, up to others being quoted over 10x that much.

I live 6km's from Featherston in South Wairarapa and was quoted $120k for fibre and $84k for copper... So it won't be cheap.

Thanks everyone for the quick answers, so it looks like the answer is lots (15k+) as I assumed, makes the $700 for the starlink look a lot better for them

Wow, $84k for copper. Didn't think that was still an option.
Makes me think that my existing rural VDSL copper connection is a very valuable infrastructure asset, probably worth $100k and I should fight tooth and nail to retain it.

Could do a wifi bridge from the people across the road if (in their name/account using second port on the ONT...if it is possible).

If -

1.) they know the people across the road well enough

2.) have a clear los

up to u or them...

That's actually on the lower end of pricing, given your distance to the nearest connection point.

Cost $14k to get connected to the fibre running past our rural property.
Not UFB or RBI fibre.
It was an old fibre cable running to a roadside cabinet (no xdsl!) about 2km past our place.
Had been in the ground since about 1996 they said.

I took it as installed across the road to mean --- at a house...vs the fibre is running along side the road.

Chorus just quoted for one of my customer installs $21k

That was to tap into a new fiber cable recently installed on the opposite side of the road running past the driveway entrance, to a new subdivision further down the road.
