So My sister lives a little outside of Pukekohe, fairly close to Harrisville school, Tuakau, and has access to ADSL and VDSL.

VDSL connection is unreliable both from a speed and uptime perspective. Vodafone have been out multiple times, and no luck. Dodgy old copper :(

They are not in an RBI area.

Skinny/Spark do not service the area with wireless broadband, Vodafone do. I have taken out a portable 4g modem/hotspot and performance wasn't great.

We have an indicative quote of 20k+ for fibre to the property.

So options seem to be starlink or wheronet.co.nz

Anyone had experience with wheronet? They seem to be the best option at the moment.

If it was me I'd go starlink but my sister is not the most tech savvy and will have a hard time with any trouble shooting, ruling that out for the moment.

If she owns the property, I'd look at fibre at that price. If she rents, you'd be best to look at another option...as per here:

https://broadbandmap.nz/availability/-37.23846125768234/174.9286919696854?address=Buckland%2C%20Pukekohe

This will depend on her specific address, but it seems like there are several wireless options there.

Wasn't an official quote just a 'estimate'.

She does own.

Vodafone reception wasn't great - that's why the question about wheronet.

What does the map say she can get if you enter her address? It looks like Buckland is covered in wireless.

Spark says not available
Vodafone is available, but when I took a portable hotspot there reception was very poor, worse than the poor vdsl she currently has.

Wheronet says available - but never heard of them and wanted to get some real world experience

Why rule out starlink?
Will they need to install it themselves?
Once it’s installed it’s really no different to any other internet connection with a wireless router.

FYI I had an estimate of $10k +/- $2k for my fibre and the proper quote from Chorus came back at just over $14k, which I paid.

Okay my guess the reason the “poor reception” is the case is the hotspot you are using doesn’t support Band28

As for poor VDSL have you done the usual stuff, Master filter etc

I'm Picking your sister is closer to buckville road as there is fiber all the way up to Harrisville School.

Give John a call, very nice guy, have dealt with him recently, he will be able to point you in the right direction if he cant get service to your sister.

It was a Vodafone supplied hotspot, used for work.

We've also had Vodafone (chorus?) out several times, rain causes poor performance, random disconnects etc. I think this has been done.

Ok, cheers, do you use them, is the connection reliable? Rain fade?
Is the speed what's described?

I have a client in Onewhero and she is on DSL and it is really poor DSL at that, I have mentioned Wheronet and she has said no, they are expensive to do the install or some excuse like that.

I think they must be sizeable as I found out about by speedtest, they have a speedtest server on their network some ware.

I used to use Netspeed ( delivered by Vodafone ), the router can have external antenna, speed was better than VDSL ( was not available at or place ) and rock solid.

Both Wheronet and Netspeed give you a static IP which is great.

The great thing about Netspeed is that it is not tied to a tower for delivery like Spark, if you have a motorhome or a Bach, take it with you and you have internet at your destination.

Wheronet appears to be $200 for the install - thats ok.

Ok - I'll ping netspeed as well, the unit I tried vodafone on was just a 4g portable hotsopt, not a bigger unit.

Feel free to PM the address and I can check a couple of things. As for 4G rural broadband, I can install a range of custom antenna options to make this work in low signal areas.

coffeebaron has been helping geekzoners with their xDSL for many years, both in person, and via the forum. Many people will vouch for him!

Yup Defiantly one of the good wisps out there!

I'd highly recommend looking towards a wisp before going 4G. particularly with these lockdowns, the 4G spectrum just tends to get belted damn hard.

if you do end up going towards 4G, go through coffeebarron, he will make sure your set for the best experience atleast.

Installation for both of them will be about the same.
