I'm in Wellington and my Vodafone HFC connection has died. They're talking about maybe sending a new router, but I run a business from home and need a solution Real Soon Now. There's a chorus fibre box on the wall and it might be time to activate it.

My priorities are reliability, support, time to get connected, and a static IP address. Cost is a factor but not the main one. Can anyone recommend a fibre provider? Thanks in advance.

Top recommendations on here are usually 2degrees, Voyager or Skinny.

Voyager and Skinny (I think) do static IP's, not sure about 2degrees.

2d does static IPs for $10 a month

If you run a business from home then look at Voyager.

$15 once-off cost for a static IP.

Else, if you need something as soon as possible we have a resident wizard on the forums (@DanFaulknor / Prodigi) who should be able to give you same day service (record is I believe an hour for a connection on here) assuming you have a router already.

Thank you. Voyager's website says fibre isn't available at our address even though chorus does, but probably if I call them we can sort that out.

If I place the order now it'll be live by 8am, maybe 7am depending on what slots are available. We were/are a business ISP first and a static IP is included.

Thanks for the mention @michaelmurfy :)

2degrees is excellent, downtime and performance issues are rare, and I've always had good support on the rare occasion I needed it.

+1 for voyager.

I have only had to call them twice, answered phone withing a few seconds first time and a few minutes the second time.

Both issues resolved in seconds.

I left 2D because of their poor performing helpdesk.

Thanks everyone.

@danfaulknor I've sent you a PM.

@cyril7 if I were sure it was just the HFC router I might change it, but (a) the router is definitely running, it just won't connect to the internet. I got the impression Vodafone support was grasping at straws a bit when they suggested replacing the router, and I can't afford to wait a week or two while they figure out what's going on, and (b) we have regular drop-outs on the HFC, and other people in our neighbourhood do too. Hopefully fibre won't have the same problem.

Hi David, ok I understand, so probably the HFC modem or local HFC issues, moving forward going to Chorus fibre opens you up to greater provider options than just Voda. I think Dan should see you right. If your current modem is still working then its just a matter of patching it to the Chorus ONT, although depending if Prodigi uses PPP you will need to adjust that, a 2min job.

So talking hardware...

Separately to the Vodafone router I have a switch with 3 Ubiquiti UniFi access points connected to it. With fibre will I need a separate router, and if so what does it actually do?

Any recommendations on which fibre router if I want to buy?

Hi, I assume you have the Vodafone Ultra Hub currently, if so then that can continue to do what it does on Fibre. If it were me I would be getting an RB4011, excellent router or the slightly more expensive 5009, but does require skill to setup, that said there is a quickset mode that covers most settings easily. Some folk around here scold folk for recommending Mikrotik saying they are too complex to recommend to everyday users, this is true, but still by far the best routers for the $ out there.

Fibre is far superior to cable, too (IMO). I worked for Telstra Clear for a number of years, so have some experience with it.
