 Just finished the contract with Skinny and looking to move to other ISP. Had a look on compare broadband and see the deal from Slingshot

Anyone using Slingshot right now? What's their network and speed like?

have you looked through previous threads on here? some of the routing threads etc?

 

they will give you a good indication on what you can expect

I've been with them for a few years, from when they were Stuff Fibre, and have no complaints. It Just Works™.

Linux: Why change if Skinny is working for you?

Probably for pricing as the OP seems to be looking for the best deal

I bounce between Slingshot and Orcon to take advantage of the new customer deals, because it's all the same company in the background. Switching is a buttery smooth process when the time comes.

Network performance or downtime has never been a problem (I'm based in Palmy).

Dynamic public IP addresses are very sticky, so I've found no need to purchase a static IP for my use-case. I've had the same public IP address since I joined Slingshot again ~18 months ago.

Slingshot were willing to alter their pricing when I asked if they could match a competitors offer.

I've used their gigabit plan offerings until the 300/100 plans were rolled out which better suit my needs vs cost.

I have no reason at all to change.

I prefer Spark, generally I've found their customer service team to be helpful, able think outside the box & willing to take ownership.

 

The monthly bill is easy to understand, MySpark is great too.

 

I look after around 30 Spark broadband accounts (no I'm not plugging them).

 

Spark NZ based CSR's  appear to be better trained than at other providers (the Philippine's centre not so much but still beats VF or Trustpower).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Slingshot is part of Vocus Group who are also behind Orcon. 

 

I've dealt with Orcon helpdesk in the past and found them to be less than helpful.

Was with Slingshot in 2021. No issues. YMMV. Only moved because Skinny had 6 months free at the time.

Been with Slingshot since 2012, was coming up 10 years.

 

What caused a change in provider was how Slingshot's customer team handled switching to fibre broadband.

 

 

 

October 2021: Slingshot was told about moving to fibre, they drafted a deal together so it was a similar price to our previous ADSL plan (which is near Skinny prices in 2022).It was agreed upon.

 

December 2021: Fibre was set to be installed but the contractor never turned up. Earliest booking was July 2022.

June 2022:

 

  • Slingshot would not honour the agreed price from 2021.
  • Fibre plan was cancelled, but in their system said it was already active as standard rates. Apparently they couldn't easily deactivate the fibre without also cutting our ADSL off??? So they left it.

July 2022 - Day of fibre install:

 

  • Fibre was finally installed by a new contractor.
  • Slingshot have still not cancelled their system with the fibre plan. The support person was apologetic and said their maybe an issue if Chorus had activated the ONT to Slingshot.
  • Installer asks to plugin a router to see if it gets the network lights blinking, answer was yes. This was about 20min after plugging in the ONT for the first time.

Late July 2022 - Changing to Skinny:

 

  • Slingshot didn't seem to have activated the ONT. (few!)
  • Notice was given to Slingshot about ADSL cancelling and a date set.
  • Skinny had been activated to the ONT.

September 2022: Slingshot's system sent a few emails about non-payment for the fibre plan.

 

Finally all that got sorted just after the end of semester university exams... online ones.

 

 

 

I would have been with Slingshot if that contractor had turned in 2021 up or Slingshot honoured the price agreed on.

 

Extra pain that someone activated fibre a standard plan and the emails about non-payment.

 

 

 

 

 

So far Skinny has been fine.

 

I use my own router (even though they say not to) and conveniently their customer public IP leasing doesn't seem to change unless the router is re-connected. I've got a DDNS just incuse.
