Hi we are thinking of moving rurally and noticed through Chorus'es site we can apparently get Fibre anywhere in NZ but have to pay for it. The house we are keen on does not currently have it.

Has anyone had this done rurally and the cost? Which provider did you use? Thanks so much!

Going by other threads, potentially in the thousands of dollars. See if there are any WISPs in your area or consider Starlink.

Depending on your location, it can get expensive.  When we asked Chorus a few years ago I think it was around $1.5M .  Unfortunately our neighbours weren't interested in sharing the cost...

You might find a WISP on https://broadbandmap.nz/  .  We don't have any local WISPs, but Starlink's been pretty good for us.

@meremaiden Maybe @ChorusNZ do not provide Fibre in that part of NZ

You could be moving to a North power area for all we know as you have not mentioned the location

Wow, this is exactly the kind of info I was curious on - thank you! Glad to know Starling is working well, much appreciated!

Every location will be different - there is no "standard' cost or anything like that. It depends on your distance to the nearest fibre line and whether it can be used or not.

If you're still keen, call around RSP's and ask them to get a quote for an NGA on Application. Be prepared to pay a lot - and not all providers offer it either. However as others have said, a local WISP or even something like Starlink will probably be a lot cheaper (and easier).

What's the name of the road (or general location)? "Outskirts of Whangarei" is a pretty big area.

One provider that I don't often see mentioned here is Netspeed. They use the OneNZ network I think. We were in a situation where we rented in rural Waikato for a month and found the service excellent. Their $100 plan suited us fine, could watch movies etc. Had cause to call support while I was getting things set up, found them very friendly and responsive.

I have a suitable wireless modem now surplus to requirements should you decide to go with them😉

We’re rural Oamaru, about 25 mins inland.
No dsl or cell coverage so went with a local wisp when we moved there in Jan 2019.
Used FullFlavour ISP to get a rough estimate just after the first lockdown in 2020 and found that there was a fibre running right past our property.
They estimated $10k to get connected so we got a proper quote from Chorus and it came to just over $14k and we went ahead and got connected.
Took until just before Christmas 2020 to go live.

WOOOOWW. 14K and it was right past your property? Oof. How does it work for you now? I think we'd probably be willing to spend that, but looking at the placement of the exchanges I reckon we would be in for much much more sadly. Thanks for your # - exactly the info I was after.

Works just like any other fibre, no issues.
We’re on a gigabit plan with Quic now.
I run my IT business from home so the business paid for it. :)

If just outside of Whangarei then have a look at Uber Group (not to be confused with the Ride-Share and Food Delivery service) https://uber.nz/

I was on Netspeed a few years ago and also had excellent service from them. They really went out of their way to do their best for me, but in the end we were both defeated by Vodafone, which provided the RBI signal. There was only one mast I could use and while it was brilliant initially with down speeds that maxed around 50 Mbps, that became more and more congested over time until it actually was almost like dial-up. Download speeds would drop to 2-3 Mbps or worse in the evenings and sometimes I couldn't get a connection at all. Finally a local WISP came to my rescue and I haven't looked back since. It is only around 30 Mbps down but it is that nearly all the time. Compared to what I had before it almost feels like fibre.

I'm no network planner, so I cant give you numbers unfortunately. Would highly recommend getting a Fibre on application request going at least to see what the cost would be. The quote comes with no obligation to follow through so its worth getting at least to see.

Buuuuut, I do have access to the Chorus Fibre database. If you want to flick us a private message with your address I could do some digging, find out what network we have in your location and at least give you a rough picture of what it may cost. - Richard
