How many here have a Whitebox for reporting back to the Commerce Commission for ISP speeds etc?

Just got mine this week (small delay as I was in hospital unable to sign for it so it was sitting in NZpost for a week)

Initially just had it set up on my desk next to my computer just to get it going before I plugged it into my router.

I am on a ONEnz (Vodafone) FibreMax plan. Having it a week I have not noticed anything get slower yet. My servers all run ok

I am

I'm a geek, a gamer, a dad, a Quic user, and an IT Professional. I have a full rack home lab, size 15 feet, an epic beard and Asperger's. I'm a bit of a Cypherpunk, who believes information wants to be free and the Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it. If you use my Quic signup you can also use the code R570394EKGIZ8 for free setup. Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

I have had one ever since the changeover from Truenet.

While some here were critical of some things about Truenet, they pale into insignificance to SamKnows.

Truenet compared ISPs versus ISPs and told YOU  (the public)

SamKnows may know the same info but they DON'T tell the public.

All the results are here: https://comcom.govt.nz/regulated-industries/telecommunications/monitoring-the-telecommunications-market/monitoring-new-zealands-broadband/Reports-from-Measuring-Broadband-New-Zealand

Below if link to latest results, page 30ish has RSP results.

Samknows and the Comcom committed very early on that they would only report results where the data stood up to statistical rigour. That means where there aren't enough data points, that SPECIFIC metric won't be reported - this is why some metrics are shown only aggregated, not per ISP. As (if) volunteer numbers increase, more drilldown will be provided.

Unless you understand how the data is being measured, analysed and reported on properly, you should refrain from making ill informed comments.

I saw Truenet report that a 100Mbps plan could do over 300Mbps because they didn't understand that having the entire download test fit inside the configured burst values was going to give misleading results. I saw them report differences that didn't stand up to statistical significance and they removed 'outlier' data without communicating it.

Samknows is head and shoulders above all the prior Comcom/MBIE measurement test partners.

Cheers  - N

I had one but when I contacted them regarding some strange results, they let me know that due to being in a Hyper-fibre plan, my results would be removed from any findings at the WhiteBox v8 only supports up to Gigabit speeds…couldn’t see the point in taking part after that, so I unplugged it (they did mention they’d be in contact should they look to survey all available plans…so we shall wait and see). I didn’t notice any adverse affects on my connection while it was I place.

I did wonder about hyper fibre. Considering I will have to upgrade all my network to do it. I will wait until I can get a decent 10G switch and better cabling between my ONT and Office.

Only way SAMknows can do it is if their white box had all 10G ports. That will be expensive.
