Hello,

My parents have recently moved. There was a mix up with the address, so fibre took a few extra days to connect. They are about to get a landline added (Sky advised fibre needed to be active first). Who assigns the telephone number? It would like to see if I can get them one similar to an old number if possible (they have moved area codes - so cannot keep the old number).

Am I best contacting Sky Broadband or Tuatahi in Hamilton?

Thank you in advance

John

Hi John,

Go ahead and contact Sky - If the landline number existed at one point in time and got disconnected, it would've been released back into the large pool of landline numbers. Sky will have a look and see if it's available, and then go from there.

The number will have gone back to the pool of the RSP that is the owner of that block

use this site https://www.nad.org.nz/ to see who the number owner was

Are they the same area code and just the exchange area (first three digits) is different?

If the area code  (07 04 09 03) is the same and its just the exchange area that's different it may be possible to get the original number back

If they ported to any of the SIP providers, wouldn't they be able to use any number anywhere?

To clarify, they have moved from an 09 area to 07 - so the STD code is changing.

Thank you NZTim. From reading the NAD website, looks like I might just put the specific number request in the bin. Looks like the ISPs are give blocks of numbers and the chance of getting one similar to my parents last 2 numbers is likely to be similar to finding a needle in a haystack.

Thanks all for your help.

As mentioned above, their best option is to reclaim the number and port it to a VOIP/SIP provider, then they CAN keep the same STD code as its inconsequential where the number is based,

Case in point: we have a VOIP phone in our bach that is the same number as the one at home and they are in different STD zones, they both ring together when the number is called,

Sign up with the RSP which has the number you want then port to your prefered RSP
