There has been strange things happening with Slingshot and YouTube,  what happens is,  if you watch a video like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrD-IIMZ2gs  and if you start in SD and then change to HD, you still only get to see SD version, the file size is the same.

Slingshot say it's not a caching problem and that it's youtube problem and everyone is getting this.
Which I think is wrong as other NZ ISP's don't have this problem at all.

So my question is,  can you see both HD as SD verison of the clip mentioned?

Thanks

Sitting here in the office, using Chrome on my Xtra connection I can see both SD & HQ versions of that video. That said - some parts of that clip to appear SD as they've probebly been grabbed from a low quaility source.

On this Inspire connection I could clearly see the difference between the SD and HD version of that video which there was a convo about on the SS forums.

Most of the videos which I've seen since, however, don't appear to have HD versions available.

I contacted the Slingshot helpdesk but they say they are doing nothing to youtube and say it's youtube that's not delivering HD content correctly.

Thanks Detruire and Cybergangster for the info.

Does your SS connection use the proxy?

If so, I'll see if there's a difference between the SD and HD versions on my parent's SS connection (which better not be going through the proxy)

I have latency on (as im not a gamer) and use the proxie, which is great when it's working correctly.

Would be cool if you could test it,  I use internet download manager to see the different file sizes.

By latency on do you mean interleaving?

imo on vs off doesn't make a difference to anything noticable except latency. (I couldn't get more than ~25% of my line speed when using SS anyway) Yell

Just got off the phone with Slingshots helpdesk.  After pointing out the other ISP's can view the HQ youtube no worries, they reported that youtube HQ is not working because Slingshot doesn't have enough international bandwidth but that should be fixed by the 1st of April (no joke), I have also been given a $10 credit to make up for the substandard service which has made me happier.

That makes me seriously worried about the competence of the SS helpdesk.

Not enough int'l bandwidth shouldn't equate to no HD youtube. (It should equate to slow HD youtube instead...) Foot in mouth

I would assume they just blocked hd access so people can still watch in sd

I'm pleased you finally managed to get some kind of answer from Slingshot.
