some of the early dlink ones that came with modems were crap but i think they are all more or less the same now. if your that worried then its probably better that you dont use filters and install a splitter instead.

I think you're referring to this one

DSL10MFNZ

DSL-10MF-NZ that shipped with some DLINK 302G modems and probably some others.  I never had any problems with it myself, even when I lived in a rural location but remember lots of complaints from others. 

I'd say just go with whatever is cheapest, $20 for a low-pass filter is robbery in my book.

I suggest you go to a central filter setup, you see its not a matter of what you use but how you use it. The correct filter is the MM3200B that requires permanent wiring in. A central filter will bypass house star wiring issues that several micro filters will not.
