"What kind of broadband deals are you getting at the moment?"
Unwanted ones. Like a provider calling to say that a new technology "unlimited wireless broadband" can replace my-inlaw's fibre connection.
Nope.
Then I look on their website, and they have a fibre plan that costs only $5 more than "wireless broadband". If they want to offer reliability, why not that instead?
Nope.

It's been 5+ years and I still can't convince my elderly parents to get off the 4G Broadband that Spark sold them.
I've tried my very best to get them to install fibre with no luck.

That leaves them less than $5/mo (ex GST) after they pay the LFC for the tail. Crazy.

2degrees knew that selling broadband was never going to be a high-revenue/high-margin business.
It's a multi-play product to allow their other products to be more sticky.
By the way, is the cost of LFC public?

I had to log into the Chorus Service Provider portal to get the price, so I am erring on the side of no, hence the slightly non-specific amount mentioned :)
I know the regulated services pricing is public, not so sure about the other plans.

Sky, they called with an offer I said no, then they immediately offered the $65 deal. Which I took them up on.
I am also a SkyTV customer

Sounds like one of the big three wanting to stop paying LFC tax

Ditto Sky Broadband customer, excellent service and runs on 2degrees network (ex Vocus) there was a period where service was intermittent (with all 2g) but has been stable for months now

Tell your parents that soon the funding for free fibre installs will run out, and by not getting in before then they will 1) miss out on free stuff from the government and 2) miss out on the opportunity to increase the value of their home for free.
Not too bad offer today

Broadband pricing has become a hot topic. While consumers enjoy competitive prices, there's growing concern that this intense competition is leading to a "race to the bottom," potentially impacting the quality and innovation of services.
While competitive pricing benefits consumers in the short term, it's essential to consider the long-term implications. Sustainable pricing models are crucial to ensure that ISPs can continue to provide high-quality services and invest in the future of New Zealand's broadband infrastructure.

A good example of what can go wrong is what happened with Telecom NZ in the 1990s. When the government sold it off, the new owners focused more on making a profit than keeping the infrastructure up to scratch. As a result, there wasn’t enough investment in broadband and phone networks, and New Zealand started to fall behind.
It took years and a lot of government intervention to turn things around. That’s why it’s so important to have pricing that allows internet providers to keep delivering quality services and invest in the future. We don’t want to end up in the same position again.
