Our rural UFB connection order updated overnight and shows we are getting a 400 series ONT. This is a slight disappointment because I was hoping for the newer 500 series model.

The major issue here is I want to upgrade to Hyperfibre very soon and don't want to happen here the rather crappy ONT type switch I saw at a place where I lived in Auckland.

So would appreciate if someone can fill me in whether the 400 base fits the new Hyperfibre ONT cleanly with no modifications or hacks?

  1. What difference does it make if you get a 400 vs 500, other than the size of the unit?
  2. what do you mean by "don't want to happen here the rather crappy ONT type switch I saw at a place where I lived in Auckland." they would remove your GPON ONT and install a XGSPON ONT. I'm pretty sure you know the story with those at the moment.

But @Vindy500 @BMarquis or @wheelbarrow01 might be able to answer your questions

I no longer work at chorus, so can't guarantee it, but unless they changed something in the last few months, the type 400 and 500 use the same ITP and the type 210 hyperfibre ont will clip right on

The new Zyxel XGS-PON (Hyperfibre) ONT is directly exchangeable with the new GPON version.

An ONT type swap had been done and it was pretty rinky dink. I don't know the circumstances as it was like that when I moved in and it wasn't my house. But this install is at our own house.

The type 500 is the new Zyxel GPON ONT, the 210 is the hyperfibre Zyxel ONT you're thinking of. You won't be getting a 210 as you haven't ordered hyperfibre, and it's not yet November. You may likely get a 400 (Nokia GPON ONT with two aerial's) or the 500 (new Zyxel ONT that I helped design the labels on a few months back). I would ignore what portal says, you'll get whatever the tech has, and I suspect if you raise up enough of a fuss you could choose. Either way, the new type 210 will swap nicely onto the ITP installed when you order hyperfibre. (Assuming Chorus release it and don't keep using the big black Nokia type 110)

Thanks for the explanation @Vindy500

I had called both the GPON and XGS-PON "type 500" and have now updated my posts to clarify I am referring to the new Zyxel models.

Yep, still the same answer though

Chorus use a little white box called an ITP, it hasn't changed much since the type 300 got introduced (Nokia, one aerial)

The type 300,400,500,210 all clip onto it. Won't make a difference to your type 210 compatibility

Interesting. I assumed it was an ONT swap. But maybe it was something else. I have no idea what motivated someone to stick woodscrews into the ITP/base to hold the ONT in place. I just don't want that to happen here.

Thanks muchly for the help :-)

Sounds bizarre

I've definitely seen some interesting ONT swaps relating to the type 110 (big black HF Nokia) as that one doesn't mount to the wall...
