So just moved out here to NZ from the UK I'm a big competitive gamer! I'm asking my NZ brothers if you guys and post your traceroutes to 45.63.24.38 ( VULTR COD SERVERS SYDNEY ). So i can get a look at what ISPs use what network routes to Sydney and from where in NZ. Here's mine currently in Hamilton.

Im specifically looking at QUIC ISP so if anybody has them it would really help me out. My current ISP is PURELINK.

Many thanks.

Morning, the traces only get so far due to the endpoint not replying to ICMP, but see below for both traceroute and MTR from a Quic connection in Auckland.

traceroute to 45.63.24.38 (45.63.24.38), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
 1  192.168.100.254 (192.168.100.254)  0.427 ms  0.452 ms  0.354 ms
 2  bng1-akl1.vetta.net (103.243.102.32)  2.125 ms  2.167 ms  2.044 ms
 3  core1-akl1.vetta.net (103.243.102.106)  3.041 ms  3.044 ms  3.027 ms
 4  bdr1-syd1.vetta.net (14.102.98.71)  25.611 ms  25.585 ms  25.606 ms
 5  as20473.sydney.megaport.com (103.26.68.93)  25.642 ms  25.614 ms  25.594 ms
 6  10.74.1.186 (10.74.1.186)  29.606 ms  28.487 ms  28.450 ms
 7  10.74.0.162 (10.74.0.162)  25.115 ms  25.269 ms  25.392 ms
 8  * * *

I'd also suggest checking out Atlas RIPE, you'll get a lot of useable info out of this, as well as Globalping, both are great for showing latency and routes for different networks. As is always with internet routing though, all can change in an instant, so results from this morning, may be completely different in an hour, so using these metrics to pick an ISP can be frought.

Routes can and do change depending on a variety of things, but routes to Sydney should be pretty much the same latencies on all NZ ISP's if you live in a major center.

Main difference with Quic would be all your traffic will go to Auckland first, your current ISP Purelink is locally based and looks to pick up their international connectivity in Hamilton (their handover hop 5 looks to be on hn-br-1.as55850.net) so probably send it directly to Sydney via Tasman Global Access submarine cable.

That wouldn't make much difference to latency though.

Was your traceroute run over WiFi?

From Hamilton, 27ms isn't bad to Sydney.

best you could really hope for is probably about 25ms going out across tga via the Hamilton which as @yitz already pointed out your path already appears to be traveling.

your connection has about 2ms before handing over to the international carrier and atleast half of that is in the initial backhaul for your connection.

There is very little room for improvement here, and the jitter to your own router may be the biggest contender to look at...

Best/worst is 25.3/26.8 so not too shabby. But agree that it doesn't really matter which RSP you go with for routes to SYD - they all do pretty good given the amount of SYD-bound traffic.

Hawaiiki cable both ways is a bit over 10 ms extra over the shortest
The old Southern Cross cable also had a protected path via Hawaii which was like 100 ms.

Some ISPs might use Hawaiki as overflow under high traffic conditions.

I honestly think you'll find all ISPs to Sydney are going to be much of a muchness. Longest hop is (obviously) going to be across the ditch. We generally have good fibre backhaul infrastructure within NZ so if you're in a UFB supplied area you'll be fine.
