what are the steps required to startup a broadband isp?

would it be possible for a new isp to undercut the prices current isps are offering because maybe some isps are locked into longer term contracts with international bandwidth providers at higher prices?

Hello there... What they meant (and joked about) is that this question doesn't have an easy answer. It reminds some of us of another person who used to post some "tricky" questions around here.

Back on topic folks.

Risk, Money, interconnection agreement with a larger telco to offer data. not worth it, just research a decent ISP and go with them.

Most ISP's are hardly even breaking even at current service levels and many are being forced to raise prices, data is not cheap.

Get a wholesale agreement to sell broadband via someone's network. (Or build your own). Buy some nice large routers, links for international and national bandwidth, helpdesk, servers, customers (oh you need some large advertising to get them) Work out how much you are willing to loose for a many years..

you quote ".. longer term contracts with international bandwidth providers at higher prices". How do you know this is true.. or is it just a guess.. You would think you can only get good prices if you buy a large amount of bandwidth.. but you have no customers to use it at day 1 (thus pay for it) so how can you afford it all

International Bandwith may not be the largest cost in offering broadband to customers.. What is?. (or is it) If you don't know these type of things things I think you better go back to playing on your C64. Why isn't everyone doing what you are suggesting?

Thanks

Something to add to above posters comments, whcih are all very true points; is that Bandwidth from an ISP's perspective is not about "data" ammounts it is more so about pipe size so to speak. SoThe actual international data prices seem affordable but you have to have a pipe size relative to customer base and peek times; its not as simple as looking up the going rate of data accross the pacific line..

What are the steps required to startup a broadband isp?

So I decided to have a semi serious attempt at making a list!

1:  Have a huge amount of capital you're willing to invest in a risky venture, with said capital do the following:

2:  Found registered company

3:  Hire x accountants and lawyers

4:  Buy or rent data centre space to hold your network operations (routers, servers etc)

5:  Buy or rent office space for all the employees you're going to need to run the ISP

6: Hire x techincal staff to plan, build and maintain your network/routers/etc

7a: Arrange agreements to resell ADSL connections provided by wholsaler x
7b: Arrange agreements to resell wireless connections provided by wholesaler x
7c:  Arrange agreements to resell phone or voip connections provided by wholesaler x

8: Hire x developers/database admins/project mangers to develop your internal software for billing/usage/public website/online user services etc

9:  Pay for x upstream bandwidth (small amount to start with because you don't have any customers yet)

10:  Pay for x interconnection with major ISP's, content providers and peering exchanges

.. might take several years to have gotten to this point

11:  Hire x customer services staff to deal with helpdesk/users/billing

12:  Hire x sales managers and marketing people to work on attracting customers

.. repeat 4-12 over and over as customers grow.

Don't forget to pay your staff during the several years of lots of expenses and no paying customers or they will leave for greener pastures.

Not a bad list there, I wouldnt even attempt this without $1 million in the pocket at lease to give you a good start. I spose you could attempt to lease and resell other ISP's services, similar to what some ISP's have done. Didn't Maxnet do that to start with?

Wow, $1million! I hope you are planning on setting this up for only 1,000 people in a 100sqm area :P
