Hi all.

I'm asking this on behalf of my sister, and the person she is living with.

They are considering getting broadband, but we are unsure if a wiring/connection service is needed.

The area of uncertainty is the alarm system. This is a system that when triggered, it calls a relative and/or cell phone. It is not monitored by any company. Can we get away with ordering a connection only?

They are on a very tight budget, and so are wanting to minimize setup costs as much as possible. I doubt they will mind if performance isn't perfect - coming from dialup, any type of boradband is a huge step up.

Thanks

You will need to have a adsl filter installed inside the alarm panel otherwise when the alarm dials out it will drop your internet connection and/or the person on the other end of the line will hear fax machine like noises.

To get an electrician or security person to install the adsl filter it should cost around $70-$100 all up.

So you either get an electrician in or pay for the connection/service fee and possibly for an extra adsl filter for your alarm.

The bottom line is if an alarm is wired to the line at ALL, you need a filter hard-wired.
It doesn't make any difference when it's actively monitored or otherwise, or even if it only dials-on-demand.

Thank you for the information.

Will discuss with them to see whether they want to install a filter on the alarm, or end up getting Telecom to put a splitter in.
