My existing modem is not reliable so I acquired a TCNZ Thomson 536v6 but in my brief attempts to get it working with another ISP I can only change the adsl authenticated user name and that still didn't work [got dsl but no ppp]

Anyone know how to reconfigure these modems or done so ?

I havnt done it but you will need to flash the firmware of the device to non xtra firmware.

I'm not sure it is possible to flash to generic firmware.

Yes you can use it so long as your ISP does not authenticate based on realms. ie as long as your ISPs radius auth only looks at the username part and ignores the @adsl.telecom.co.nz part like say Maxnet does. If your ISP auths based on your LLU line like Orcon or makes use of the realm then you're hard out of luck.

Once can change with the supplied web front end access the adsl authetication. However this change needs to be made when the dsl is not connected. I was also able to add a couple of NTP servers.

The Thomson web front end is lets say not intutitive...

At my insistance and to their credit TCNZ did supply me with some documentation on how to change the default ip address of the modem. This involves editing an ini file and then restoring it. I suspect changing this file will allow many other options to be changed.

I was also able using the web front end to create another Administrator login which allow me telnet access. The Telnet access is UNIX based and not too dissimilar to Cisco IOS. Hopefully this will now allow me full access to all the CLI commands. There is a CLI reference manual that can be downloaded from Thomson, the CLI access is very comprehensive. Hopefully that is what I have access to now.

A call I had into Thomson [yes they called back] the Tech gave me some instructions but was reluctant to confirm I could reflash with a new image. He said they are not allowed to advise that to customers of locked down modems. However I have seen on the web the neccessary images if I choose to do so.

All that said I don't think I will bother reflashing if I can do everything I can from the limited GUI or the CLI.

But at least I now have it working and overnight had no dsl disconnects unlike my venerable old modem.

You could save the config (Saves as an .ini file), edit it and then upload the changed version.
