A friend of mine has just moved house (to just outside Whakatane; Paroa to be precise), and Telecom says that DSL can't be installed because the exchange has no free ports. Apparently he is 8th in the queue with a projected install date of 2012. That sounds ridiculous, so is it likely to be true or has there just been a communication breakdown somewhere along the line?

He's also tried calling TelstraClear, but apparently the service is dependent on Telecom as he is too far out of town (according to the person he spoke to, TelstraClear has equipment in the Whakatane exchange but not out at Paroa). I found that interesting as I'm pretty sure that he's on the main Whakatane exchange; my parents certainly are and his phone number only differs by the last two digits. http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps shows him as being on the main exchange too.

But I digress. He's looking into alternative solutions but as a gamer he requires a low latency. Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with services such as Kordia Extend?

Thanks :)

Generally Wifi, Mobile Broadband and Satellite all have latency that's to high for gaming to be fun.

If I was him I'd be triple checking what exchange he's on and triple checking with Telstra.

Telecom has confirmed that he is on the Whakatane exchange, and TelstraClear is still unable to connect him.

I have difficulty believing that there are no more connections available for the next three years. Where can I get "confirmed accurate" information from? I've had a look around on Chorus' site but I'm having difficulty with finding up-to-date information on there.

What happens with cabinetisation? When a street is cabinetised, does that automatically free up the ports in the main exchange? Is there an accurate way to tell when your street is going to be cabinetised?

Unfortunately the spreadsheets on Chorus' site are not accurate, for example it lists the "planned date for cabinetisation" of WHK/AP for 1/04/2011 despite the cabinet having been physically present and working for about 6 months now. That's the cabinet that feeds my work, and it made a huge difference.

Telecom Wholesale has updated the ADSL map page, and it's now showing him on the WHK/R cabinet (instead of the main exchange). It therefore looks like the cabinet is out of ports, not the WHK exchange itself.

kordia extend should have acceptable latency. Generally terrestrial fixed wireless services are fairly good and don't let the performance/latency of satellite or mobile broadband put you off them.
