Thinking of switching back to Telecom and see they have a free offer of a Thomson TG585 with a 12 month term.

Anyone have any thoughts (good or bad) on this router? Cant seem to find any decent reviews and user reviews on Amazon say its either really good or really bad.

Cheers

I recommend getting the modem and buying a switch to plug into it (making it what comsumers call a router).

I had troubles with a linksys i bought so plugged in the free telecom modem and its brilliant, far better than the linksys. I will never go back.

It doesnt die under load either, we are heavy users. It goes into a 8 port gigabit switch which runs 5 computers, a VOIP box and a PS3. I would recommend it to anyone, though it looks cheap it has been designed really well.

I probibly use a router for more things than most, so not only does it have the load above it has Dynamic DNS and port forwarding.

As some one studying networking i highly recommend it.

The thomson DOES have dyndns function, and port forwarding.
There is no WLAN port, just 4 LAN ports.
It also has a firewall but i don't use it.
The user interface is dumbed down a lot.

The problem is that you can't properly connect other routers to this thomson modem. Switches yes, but not routers.
I used to have 3 wireless routers which were connected to each other through ethernet, to extend my wireless coverage. With the thomson, any router you add will be treated like a switch and won't be able to use wireless on the additional routers.

If you want a simple modem/router for a 3 bedroom sized home (wireless coverage) and you don't want to play around with settings or do anything fancy, then i recommend the Thomson.

But by the way, it would be worth checking if this modem/router can be used with other ISPs or if it is just Telecom.

The one supplied from telecom should come with a WAN (ADSL) connection and there should be absoultely no problem using it as a router if it is the router you use to connecect to ADSL.

What sort of problems did you have with adding wireless routers? Because you should of had none, each wireless router should not need to communicate with the other one.

The TG585 is great, have had one from when they came out when my Dlink gave up the go. Very easy to setup and nice clean user interface if you just want something that just go's and doesn't really give any trouble.

Great consumer router.
