I really hope this new southern cross cable goes ahead:

It is a shame that the cable has a lifespan of less than 25 years though.

I haven't seen any increase in data caps even though the article says international transit costs have dropped by half in the last 18 months.

I can't see how a new cable could help? I think the next big move in datacaps will be more of these free services (such as telecom/tivo) or even better, a national traffic split like telstra used to have for other NZ sources such as tvnz on demand or sky on demand. Just with sky on demand - the whole point of sky is that you have a nice box and remote you can sit down on your couch to watch rather than using your pc. The new boxes have ethernet jacks so why couldn't they offer the same services as tivo/telecom will?

I would rather see PPC-2 go ahead... That's the reason Southern Cross has been dropping its prices. PPC-1 has transmitted its first IP packets today...

The international link contributes less to your monthly internet bill than you think.

SPIN will be composed of two segments each with maximum capacity of 640Gbps. Segment 1 will connect Noumea in New Caledonia to Tahiti in French Polynesia with landing points in Vanuatu, Wallis, Samoa, and American Samoa. Segment 2 will link Noumea to Auckland with a landing point in Norfolk Island.

In Australian they have the existing AJC (Australian Japan Cable) which is being upgraded which competes with the Southern Cross Cable (SXC).

Note: SXC offers the same pricing to NZ and Australia if I recall correctly.

I don't think SPIN is going to compete with Southern Cross and PIPE though - it's more about connecting the Pacific Islands.

Kordia is apparently still hopeful for funding - the original cash was from the previous government and the new government hasn't made any decisions on it (it's not part of the $1.5 billion broadband package)

Its been interesting how much that new cable in East Africa is being talked up... TBH I think they are far more switched on technically than the Pacific Islands...

Another cable from NZ would be good and with PPC1 coming online it should force southern cross prices down.
